I don't think idling is necessary. If so, a turbo timer will be built-in to idle the engine after you have shut down. In some cases, a timer is built-in for the fan to cool the engine as in high pressure turbos.

Hi Snowman:
I am no expert but I think most t/d engines should idle before shutdown to allow the turbo to cool down. Having said that, I would not be surprised if modern t/d engines might not need this as I am mainly referring to old t/d engines from the past. With regards to stop start, I have been told diesel engines are happier when they are doing long distances as opposed to stopping & starting all the time. As I said, I am no expert but to be on the safe side you should read the cars manual or get advice to see whats best for your cars engine.

Cheers !

How do the diesel engines go with stop-start? My i30 manual says you should idle the engine for a short time before shutting down - how does this work with turbocharged engines?
