Renault-Nissan Alliance to expand CMF program for developing markets

The Renault-Nissan Alliance will expand its new engineering architecture to include models bound for developing markets from 2015.

Renault and Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn confirmed the Alliance would expand its CMF architecture to meet demand for affordable vehicles from growing economies.

Internally referred to as CMF-A, the program is a further development of the Common Module Family manufacturing architecture originally revealed in June.

Ghosn said CMF-A is aimed at meeting and exceeding the standards of consumers in the world’s fastest growing economies.

“These influential consumers don’t want a decontented car originally intended for consumers in mature markets. They want and deserve a car that is modern, robust and stylish – at a price point that represents a ‘cost breakthrough’ for such a generous vehicle.”

Compatible with both Renault and Nissan vehicles via ‘Big Modules’ encompassing engine bay, cockpit, front and rear underbody, and electrical/electronic architectures, CMF is designed to work across platforms and vehicle segments.

While the first CMF models due are the new Nissan Dualis, Nissan X-Trail and Renault Espace, Scenic and Laguna, CMF-A vehicles will begin production at the Alliance’s plant in Chennai in 2015.

Though specific details on models, volumes and pricing are due closer to the commencement of production, Nissan plans to launch 10 new vehicles in India through 2016 including the Dacia Duster-based Terrano compact SUV (pictured above) and the recently revealed Datsun Go small car.

Renault claims sales in India reached more than 35,000 vehicles in 2012, while Nissan claimed nearly 37,000.
