The all-new Lexus RX450h (hybrid) will herald another world-first for the brand, the introduction of the world’s only Atkinson Cycle V6 engine in a hybrid.

The second generation RX450h luxury SUV, due on sale in Australia mid-2009, remains the only hybrid SUV available in Australia and a flagship of the Lexus brand since 2005.
The RX450h features a new 2GR-FXE 3.5-litre dual VVT-i V6 engine which develops 204kW@6200rpm and 346Nm@4700rpm, and employs the Atkinson, or high-expansion, cycle for improved efficiency.

The Atkinson cycle design makes full use of combustion energy, by keeping the exhaust valves closed until the end of the expansion stroke.

The expansion stroke is extended, converting more of the combustion energy into torque on the crankshaft.

Lexus has combined the Atkinson Cycle with direct ignition, quad-cam multi-valves and dual variable valve timing with intelligence, to optimise efficiency.

Australian pricing has yet to be officially confirmed.
