Toyota Corolla gets hybrid wagon option for Europe

The current generation Toyota Corolla has scored petrol-electric power in a wagon configuration, but it will be available in Europe only.

Badged as the Toyota Auris Touring Sports - the Corolla is called Auris in Europe - it gets a 100kW Hybrid Synergy Drive unit comprising a 1.8-litre petrol engine and an electric motor, following the already available hybrid system in the Corolla/Auris hatchback.

The Auris Touring Sports is also offered with non-turbo 1.3- and 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engines, and 1.4- and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines, but the hybrid sits atop the range, sipping just 3.7L/100km and producing Co2 emissions of 85g/km.

The petrol engine and electric motor can operate independently or in tandem, and with both being used the hybrid system pushes the wagon from 0-100km/h in 11.2 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 180km/h.

With its battery stored beneath the rear seats, Toyota says the hybrid unit’s inclusion doesn’t compromise load space of the Touring Sports, with luggage capacity even across the range at 1658 litres with the 60:40 split/folding rear seats folded flat. That’s 538L more than the Corolla hatch’s seat-down maximum.

Boot volume of the wagon is also significantly greater than the hatch at 530L versus 280L, while a new front seat design has resulted in a 20mm increase in rear passenger knee room.

A 100mm lower sill height also features to aid in ingress and egress.

While the front end styling mirrors the Corolla hatch sold here, the Touring Sports receives some unique touches including LED daytime running lights, a new rear bumper, and roof rails.

Inside is highlighted by a 6.1-inch touchscreen multimedia interface that incorporates an AM/FM radio with an optional digital radio, a CD/MP3 player and AUX/USB/iPod ports plus Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming.

Satellite navigation and the display for the rear view camera are also shown on the unit, which also gets an exclusive Energy Monitor for hybrid models.

Available in four trim levels, with the top gaining 17-inch alloy wheels, the new Toyota Auris Touring Sports will be built at Toyota's manufacturing plant in the UK.
