Fiat 500L Trekking: off-road focus for extended city car

New details of the Fiat 500L Trekking have emerged, revealing a city car with genuine off-road intentions.

First seen at last year’s Los Angeles auto show, the Fiat 500L Trekking order book has opened in the UK providing new information about its four-engine line-up, raised suspension and traction control system.

Powerplants mirror the standard 500L’s and comprise two petrol engines – a 70kW 1.4-litre and a 77kW 0.9-litre TwinAir Turbo – and two turbo-diesels – a 63kW 1.3-litre MultiJet II and a 77kW 1.6-litre MultiJet II. The 1.3-litre MultiJet II will be offered with both manual and automatic transmissions.

Aimed at maintaining traction, stability and control over rough and slippery surfaces the Fiat 500L Trekking features Fiat’s Traction+ traction control system.

Working in tandem with the car’s stability control system, the Italian manufacturer says Traction+ manages the car’s braking system to electronically simulate the behaviour of a self-locking electromechanical differential.

Activated by a button on the dashboard, the system can be used at speeds up to 31km/h.

Traction+ joins model-specific suspension that raises the car 13mm, 17-inch alloy wheels and mud and snow tyres. City brake control, hill-start assist, cruise control, automatic lights and rear parking sensors are all also standard.

The exterior receives rugged looking plastic front and rear bumpers, wheel arches and side skirts, along with unique air intakes, skid plates and front fog lights. The interior gets a leather gear knob and steering wheel and a five-inch touchscreen featuring Fiat’s Uconnect infotainment system with Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and voice command.

Customers can also choose between two different cabin combinations, selecting either magnesio grey fabric with brown leather inserts or black fabric with white inserts.

While the Mini Countryman rival is available in seven body colours – including an exclusive Hip Hop Yellow – personalisation is further offered with a choice of a black or white roof.

Though the Fiat 500L Trekking starts at £17,095 ($28,500) in the UK, Fiat Chrysler Australia is currently reviewing the model for our market, along with both the standard Fiat 500L and the recently revealed seven-seat 500L Living.
