New Volkswagen Golf

By Alborz Fallah |

Our man on the ground is currently attending Volkswagen’s official launch of the new Golf  MkVI in Byron Bay. He sent us this quick photo before the drive program was set to begin.

Expect a full first-steer in the next 24 hours. While you’re waiting, you can find out more about the new Golf  below:

  • Tom

Cool, but why will VW not give us the Sorrocco? Its the hot hatch we really desire.

  • FRUGAL-ONE

    Once again C/A is *****PRIMO!*****

NEVER seen a website that posts faster than you guys!

As for Wheels/Motor Mag, why bother with printed and overpriced mags. all old hat by the time they are printed.

Next step for you guys is video of events, not just photos.

    Keep up the good work

    Cheers

    F-0

PS/ Any idea of the vw golf prices?

  • Tim

F-O, seems like you havent recieved your free Melbourne Motor Show ticket yet. Sucking up a bit? :P :D

On topic: This will be a good car, but it just kinda looks bland. A white GTI will be the goods though!!

  • Yianni

    Awesome!

Any news on pricing? Hopefully it stays in line with current pricing and isn’t too much affected by the low AUD at the moment.

  • http://caradvice.com.au frenchaffair

Looks good as usual from VW. Understated and desirable.
So does that mean the last model was only on the shelf 4 years?

  • NotTheStig

F-O, I think you are getting a bit carried away…

One cameraphone pic is hardly a first review. I am sure any other site could have managed the same…

It will be a nice car though. Expect similar pricing to the current model. In this market, there won’t be any big rises. I’d buy one (we have a Jetta already).

  • Andrew

I saw about ten of the Mark VI Golf, completely undisguised, pulling into the rest area at Whittingham (about ten minutes from Singleton) on the corner of the New England Highway and the Golden Highway about two weeks ago.

I saw two together and thought that was weird, then looked down the Golden Highway and saw a few more pulling in to the rest area, and when I looked in the rest area there were heaps!

  • Tom

I just passed the convoy of journo’s on my way home today

they must have went north up the freeway from byron, over the hills through everon road, then back south through murwillumbah.

  • Reckless1

Tom, we won’t let you have perhaps the most desirable VW because you desire it so much you can’t even spell it.

The Scirocco won’t come here because it will directly steal Golf GT and GTI sales.

The new Golfs look understated but cool, which some might see as a disadvantage, but actually is better for the target markets. The new engines and 7 speed DSG promises to be a technical improvement, there are already some on the roads and the drivers are loving them.

The price of the base model is reportedly the same or +$500 depending on the source of the rumour…

  • Pauly

    Check http://www.ausmotive.com

The new golf starts from $25,990.

There is an add in the latest wheels mag for the new golf.

  • Andrew

Regarding the stealing of sales I can understand your point and agree, Reckless1, but who cares? Companies go on about cannibalisation of sales but in reality as long as their brand is getting the business it shouldn’t matter! Wouldn’t it look better for a company to have a diverse and appealing product range?

Part of a car’s appeal is the brand’s image and adding such a stylish car even at a low volume would add more impact to VW’s portfolio and therefore more appeal for the brand as a whole – not that VW currently lacks in brand appeal

  • Reckless1

Andrew, I agree that a sale is a sale, but VW Aust steadfastly refuses to bring the Scirocco here.

Pity really, I think it would increase sales. Many people think the GTI is too commonplace and would probably buy the Scirocco but won’t buy the GTI.

  • Yianni

Well these seem to be the prices. No indication of any GT or GTI models as yet so we’ll have to wait and see…

  • Fasthonda

I’m sure it will be a little more refined, better ride quieter….ZZZZZZ…smoother…..ZZZZZZ…yawn!!…Oh!..Oh!sorry!,I nearly fell asleep!

  • Golfschwein

You’re probably right, Fasthonda. It should continue its reign as the best car in the class and a worldwide classic. Oh! Sorry!

  • http://honda spellbound

Yes your right golfy, i will take a gti turbo over the rev mad honda any day , torks beats bouncing of the rev limiter in a flurry of gear changes , get pretty tired of that crap after a week or two .

  • Jake02

This is what VW said: “Lets take Scirocco headlights and Touareg tailights and attach them to an old Golf, slightly refine the interior airvents and we have a new Golf”!

Except Volkswagen, it isn’t new at all. Same platform, pretty much the same prices and the same looks. Almost the same car!

Also, if Yianni is correct you can get a 118TSI for $30,490. Personally speaking, I’d MUCH rather a FACELIFTED Skoda Octavia 1.8TSI for $30,990 (although the facelift version prices haven’t been revealed yet) as it comes with ALOT more room (and I know, after testing both cars and buying a pre-facelift Octavia which I might need to trade in when the facelifted RS comes in) and a MUCH bigger boot!

Seriously, if you are looking at the Golf, you have a much better option with the Octavia as its a Golf but bigger, better equipped and priced around the same.

  • Cupid Stunt

Agree with you Fast Honda. Sorry Golfie. Having seen them in the flesh here (UK) the front is fine but the rest is “same old”. However they are far nicer to be in than before from what I have read in reports.
Think VW need to inject some more modern features into their cars or they’ll get “Toyota boring lables” if they are not carefull.

  • Paul Maric

    Tom:

    Yes, that was us.

We were heading to the Emerald Valley and back to Byron :-)

It’s an interesting car, we’ll have the full take on it online tomorrow.

  • http://www.AUSringers.com Liam

    @Andrew

I reckon the group of cars you saw would have been the Volkswagen internal dealer training which took place in the Hunter region around that time.

  • Golfschwein

Jake02, I certainly wouldn’t discount a Skoda next time round for myself, either, even though I’m a better than even chance on a new Golf.

The Octavia and Roomster seriously impress me and even the upcoming Superb will be worth the look. It’s a shame about the name, but no worse than Mercedes-Benz’s Elegance tags.

  • Nightshifter

    @Reckless1

“The Scirocco won’t come here because it will directly steal Golf GT and GTI sales.”

I don’t get this. Does this mean VW is not selling the Scirocco in Europe too cos it’s stealing Golf sales?

Can’t wait to see the GTI versions review

  • t39

So, where is the promised full review? it’s been way more than 24hours.

  • NotTheStig

    “Once again C/A is *****PRIMO!*****

NEVER seen a website that posts faster than you guys!”

    F-O,

Well, I have. Plenty of other reviews out already on the Golf VI on other AU sites…
