Jeep recalling almost 35,000 cars in Australia

Fiat Chrysler Australia will recall almost 35,000 Jeep SUVs after two separate recalls were made public this week.

Approximately 28,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Cherokee models will be recalled locally in response to the Chrysler Group’s announcement that it will voluntarily recall 1.5 million Jeeps in the US as part of an agreement with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Fiat Chrysler Australia says the local recall affects Jeep Grand Cherokees built between 1993 and 2004 and Cherokees built between 2002 and 2007, while the US recall covers Grand Cherokees from 1993-1998 and Jeep Libertys (badged locally as the Jeep Cherokee) from 2002-2007.

The NHTSA originally requested the recall of 2.7 million Jeeps with safety concerns over the vehicles’ fuel systems.

The US government body said in its official recall request letter to Chrysler that it viewed “a performance defect and a design defect” related to the vehicles’ fuel tanks that presented an “unreasonable risk” of fuel leaks and fire if the specific vehicles were struck from the rear.

Independently, 4064 Jeep Patriot and 2730 Compass models built between 2010 and 2012 have also been recalled due to a fault with the vehicles’ Occupant Restraint Control Module (ORC) software.

According to the official recall notice on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) product safety recalls website, the ORC software error “could result in non-deployment of the seatbelt pretensioner and/or side airbag curtains during low-speed roll-over events and increase the risk of injury to occupants”.

Fiat Chrysler Group’s director of corporate affairs, Karla Leach, told CarAdvice that a reprogramming of the ORC module would rectify the problem, with the software update to take approximately one-hour at no cost to owners.

Leach said that while there have been no reports of any incidents related to the fault in Australia, a number of events in the US sparked the global recall that has seen 254,400 SUVs recalled in the US and approximately 45,400 in Canada.

Early this month, 333 Compass and Patriot models were also recalled in Australia due to a defective fuel tank transfer tube that risked vehicles stalling.
