Seat Leon Verde plug-in hybrid prototype unveiled

The Seat Leon Verde plug-in hybrid prototype has been unveiled at an electromobility event in Spain.

Based on the new five-door Seat Leon hatch – itself sharing its underpinnings with the new Volkswagen Golf Mk7 – the plug-in hybrid Verde prototype was unveiled as part of the Cenit Verde project, an initiative to boost electromobility in Spain.

With a drivetrain comprising a 75kW electric motor, a 90kW turbocharged 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine, an 8.8kWh battery pack and a six-speed gearbox, the Seat Leon Verde has a claimed all-electric range of 50km and a total hybrid range of over 800km.

Efficiency figures equivalent to 1.6 litres per 100km and 36 grams of CO2 per kilometre are also expected.

Compatible with a smart recharge management system, the Spanish plug-in allows for two-way connection to the grid via a 20kW on-board battery charger, meaning its battery can not only be recharged from the main power supply but the vehicle itself can also feed electricity back into the grid.

The Seat Leon Verde also features an advanced smartphone interface that connects to the vehicle wirelessly via an app, making management of energy consumption, battery status and charge reserves possible, as well as estimated CO2 savings when in pure electric mode.

The Cenit Verde project has used its 34 million euro budget to boost research into electromobility, with its aim being to “transform Spain into a global player in the sector of the electric vehicle”.
