Toyota Camatte57s: toy car concept designed for kids

The Toyota Camatte57s concept has been unveiled at this week's Tokyo toy show, designed to give kids the chance to get behind the wheel of a car.

A sporty, open-top family-focused concept, the Toyota Camatte57s takes inspiration from the fun parents and kids have when making things together.

Toyota believes that involving young children in the process of choosing the shape and look of a car will help them learn more about the fun aspects of motoring before they become adult drivers.

Measuring 3000mm long, 1440mm wide and 1000mm high – 305mm longer, 119mm narrower and 542mm lower than a Smart Fortwo – the new bug-eyed three-seater concept is powered by an electric motor. Its body is made of 57 small, lightweight, detachable panels that can be finished in a range of different colours and designs.

The Camatte57s' pedals and seats can be adjusted so that even children can drive, with the position of the right-hand rear seat allowing adults to help with steering and braking, in a layout first seen in the original Toyota Camatte concept from last year's 2012 show. Toyota says this means “youngsters can make an early start on developing their driving skills in appropriate, safe places, off the public highway”.

The concept's name is intended to reflect the idea that people should feel more in touch with each other and their vehicles, with Camatte meaning 'care' in Japanese and the 's' representing the Japanese word 'sawaru', meaning 'to touch'.

The 2013 Tokyo toy show opens its doors on June 13.
