Toyota to display three new Hybrids at MIMS
February 23, 2009 by Matt Brogan
Toyota will display not one, but three new Hybrid models when the Melbourne International Motor Show kicks off this Friday.
The environmentally friendly vehicles include the all-new third generation Prius, the locally styled Hybrid Camry Concept vehicle (pictured above) and Toyota’s futuristic 1/x show car.
The company’s David Buttner said the vehicles reveal Toyota’s determination to make sustainable mobility a reality.
“The three Toyota hybrid cars unveiled today contain ground-breaking technologies and highlight innovative possibilities for the future of motoring,” said David Buttner, senior executive director sales and marketing. “The Hybrid Camry Concept Vehicle was conceived and produced in-house by Toyota Style Australia. It is a strong pointer to the hybrid Camry we will manufacture right here in Australia from early next year. Its startling paintwork, dramatic lines and sporty appearance definitely convey the passion in our company to produce Australia’s first hybrid car.”
“The third-generation Prius is a quantum leap in technology that includes a remarkable double: improved performance while using less fuel,”Mr Buttner continued. “While the 1/X concept is a vehicle that completely redefines what it means to be environmentally considerate. The name says it all: a car that weighs a fraction of others in its class today – and uses a fraction of the fuel.”
The hybrid vehicles are joined on the Toyota stand by two custom cars from Auto Salon – a Yaris hatch and a RAV4 SUV – and 12 other production vehicles.
Melbourne International Motor Show commences this Friday from 5pm at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

Who would bother to go to a motor show to see a Camry or Prius?
Nothing slightly interesting about any Toyota in Australia right now.
Time to bait the faithful :-)
Can anyone tell me why they’d bother doing a styling exercise like that on a the camry when head office will only tell them to do it exactly the same as the US car?? Is this what they got the 70 mil for?? A blue badge and some dimples to go with the removal of energy sapping high beam lights……….
I am somewhat surprised they bothered about restyling the camry for the hybrid version, thought it would just be the same as the US version. Unless this is going to applied to the facelifted camry meant to appear later this year
just a concept…….
Why don’t toyota bring the Klugger Hybrid here? The amount of korean Captivas being sold and the failing Territory sales, shows familys want an ecconomical family wagon.
Frontman, I would suggest that most of the government (TAXPAYERS) money will go to lowering the price and subsidising Toyota selling the hybrid for less than they cost them.
Nobody will pay $45-50 000 for a camry – no matter how green it is.
Most people will go and test drive the camry hrbid for the novelty but wind up buying the old petrol type for its price. They may get some fleets on board with them.
Listening to Paul Beranger talk about this car, you would think that he has single-handedly delivered humanity from certain doom (”Blue is the new green”). Call me a cynic, but I’m pretty sure that car stylists will not play a part in saving the world, no matter how much blue plastic they use.
