Camaro and Corvette safe despite HPVO shut down

February 23, 2009 by Matt Brogan

Despite General Motors recently scraping its High Performance Vehicle Operations unit, GM spokesman Vince Muniga has stepped in to clarify the situation and assure buyers that the decision doesn’t necessarily spell the end of performance orientated GM vehicles.

Thankfully this means cars like the Chevrolet Camaro SS, Corvette ZR1 and Z06 were spared the axe because they were engineered as standard vehicles and therefore have no affiliation to GM’s HPVO unit.
“Camaro SS, Corvette ZR1 and Corvette Z06 are all regularly engineered cars,” Muniga said. “They did not go through HPVO. Most people did not realise that. They are safe.”

However, Cadillac’s V-Series cars and other high-performance models such as the Chevrolet Cobalt SS and HHR SS and Pontiac G8 GXP (pictured above) were developed through HPOV. Those vehicles will continue as planned for the time being, but likely won’t be replaced after their current lifecycle is over.

So the announcement is basically window-dressing; ditch a new niche models but keep the mainstays of the performance catalogue.

Typical GM; manipulate the perception but no real change at all.

  2. Frenchie says:

HVPO may have developed the extra bits for the GXP but every thing is factory fitted!

Like HSV asking Holdens to fit all the parts that they fit on the car.

HSV get a basic mule from Holdens and fit all their goodies that they seek or develop.

So the only real lose is going to the Cadillac V series it seems.
