I'm a Pom living in Aus for 1 year now and have seen comments on websites about the Camry being "a great car". They don't sell the Camry in Europe, instead they do the Avensis which I have driven, which is well finished, decent handling and reasonably desirable. We rented a Camry in Tas for 3 days and I was generally underwhelmed. First impressions were of a nasty plastic dashboard with lightweight controls and trim. This was reinforced halfway through our rental when some trim fell off. The driving experience was equally disappointing, the steering being quick and precise enough with not much body roll, but totally devoid of any feel. Otherwise it was generally OK if not the smoothest. Looks are subjective but I was a long way from "in love with the easy going looks"! "Bland" springs to mind.

This is the car equivalent of a microwave. Being a Toyota it will be totally reliable, easy to drive and painless to own but will never offer any driving pleasure. Toyota can do better than this (the current Corolla is a better drive) - but take a drive in a Ford Mondeo which is vastly better in just about every area! Fords in Europe are now very close in reliability to Japanese - one car mag stripped down a standard 4cyl Focus which had done 250K miles/400K Km and found it was just fine.

The Camry Altise is badly underpowered. It's handbrake position would better suit a 'left-hand'drive car. The interior "cubby-holes" are pokey and ineffectual. It's drivers side side mirror is down right dangerous, (objects are alot closer than they appear in the mirror), and yet the passenger side mirror is a normal reflection? ( maybe a hang over from a 'left-hand'side driving design? An immense dissapointment.

the Camry's handbrake lever is situated to far away from the driver [it's next to the passenger seat] is it possible
for toyota to reconsider relocation of the handbrake lever.

well well
toyota do it again ....
well constantly ( for the time that camrys have been sold in OZ) ...

i have had 4 since my first new car in the mid 90s in the ACT a wide bodied 4cyl CSI camry sedan

Curantly own a V6 2004 altise Camry sedan

great reliable Motor veichle ( pity that they are not V6 any more in production , the 3 Ltr V6 motor is so reliable and cost effective ) the 4cyl current model is a let down for as stated , loss of power and performance , for a greatly improved car as it as done thru all the model releases , since its first release all those years ago in Australia

Keep up the good work Toyota ... camry has been a winner for ,no nonsence, depenable and reliable family transport for lots of Aussie familys , at a great price
