2009 Ford Ranger previewed

By Matt Brogan |

Ford Australia has today announced details of its updated PK Ranger models, which it says aims to couple muscular performance with visual excitement.

Perhaps the most noticeable design cue comes in the form of Ranger’s bold new front-end styling. A distinctive horizontal three-bar grille embossed with RANGER lettering, functional twin black vertical nostrils, an extended opening below the bumperline and large headlamps that wrap around each front corner all separate the 2009 model for its predecessor.

The three-bar grille is one of Ford’s global design traits and is a prominent feature on the flagship F-150. It is this grille, which along with clever remoulding of the front panel work, that achieve a modern and muscular stance for the new PK series Ranger.

A large opening in the lower fascia provides a fresh supply of cool air to the TDCi turbocharged engine’s intercooler. By mounting the intercooler forward of the radiator and directly in the flow of cool air, the boosted intake charge from the variable-geometry turbocharger remains consistent and allows the engine to perform more efficiently.

Designed by a Ford team based in Melbourne, the new Ford Ranger is built in Rayong, Thailand, and will also feature newly designed alloy wheels to compliment the visual changes of the exterior.

XLT models will feature 16-inch alloys wheels while 18-inch rims are available on Wildtrak variants – or as a cost option (XL models receive 15-inch steel wheels).

Ranger is now available in three series levels (XL, XLT and Wildtrak) and in three body types (Single Cab, Super Cab or Crew Cab). 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains are available across the range.

The popular Ranger 4×2 Hi-Rider, with an additional 26mm above standard Ranger 4×2 (to a total of 207mm) will also remain available.

All Ranger models offer an MP3-compatible CD/tuner as standard. The lower centre console also featuring a 12-volt power outlet and auxiliary audio connection facility.

Offering two Duratorq TDCi engines the new Ranger is available with either a 2.5- or 3.0-litre unit, both of which employ an intercooled, variable-geometry turbocharger designed to reduce lag, improve performance and maximise efficiency. Both TDCi engines also develop class-leading torque outputs. In the case of the 3.0-litre unit, this torque is some 10 per cent more than Toyota’s HiLux.

ford_pk_ranger_006

The 2.5-litre engine develops 105kW and 330Nm, while the 115kW 3.0-litre version delivers 380Nm peak torque at 1800rpm. Both engines can be configured in either 4×2 or 4×4 with a choice of Ford’s five-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed manual.

All new Ranger models ride on a unique overlapped, cross-braced ladder frame which delivers strength and rigidity – as well as superior load-carrying capacity, towing capability, durability, handling performance and ride quality.

Front suspension utilises a double wishbone arrangement with torsion bar springs while up back a tough, long-leaf  set up (with oversized 32mm gas shock absorbers) helps maintain stability when the vehicle is under load.

Ranger 4×2 Hi-Rider and Ranger 4×4 models also gain a two-way mechanical, multiplate, torque-sensing limited slip differential in the rear axle.

XLT and Wildtrak feature ABS (with EBD) as standard though this is available as a cost option on XL.  The ABS system has been calibrated especially for Ranger’s load carrying and towing capabilities.

Cargo capacity varies depending on cab configuration and engine type. Dimensions are as follows:

  • Single Cab – 2280mm x 1456mm
  • Super Cab – 1753mm x 1456mm
  • Crew Cab – 1530mm x 1456mm

Ranger also offers class-leading towing capability. Ranger 4×2 models equipped with the 2.5-litre TDCi are rated at up to 2250kg, while the Ranger 4×4 3.0-litre TDCi models can tow up to 3000kg.

New Ranger will be launched first in Thailand from mid February with Australia expected to see the new model during either the first or second quarter of this year.

lets hope it’s easy to REMOVE that front grill and replace it with something decent…

  • Tim

Why did they ruin the front end??? The second pic made me cringe lol.

  • http://skyline The Salesman

Why Ford, WHY!. The front looks a little like tweety, you know that little yellow bird. Just paint some eye lashes either side. I tawt i taw a reliable ute I want to buy, oh well, i loose more sales that way.

  • ScottB

I thought the Melbourne design team was working on the all-new pickup to replace the current Ranger series, not a mild facelift?

  • JEKYL & HYDE

    salesman,

priceless!!!quote of the month honors to you…

  • Frontman

    ScottB Says:
    February 20th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
Melbourne are working on both… This one had a lot of Asian influence to contend with :-(

  • Captain Mainwaring

This is a tradesman’s truck for goodness sake. It looked just great before. Why the Hell did they have to turn it into a poofter-wagon?
Goodbye Ranger – I wonder what the Mazda version’s going to look like.

  • Simon

    “The 2.5-litre engine develops 105kW and 330Nm”
There is zero to boast about here. VW easily get 103KW & 320NM out of a 2.0L. Other euro’s get similar figures. These figures are pathetic. Hyundai has some impressive oilers on the drawing board, but they don’t sell whilst on paper. When will they pick up the game?
    “the 115kW 3.0-litre version delivers 380Nm peak torque at 1800rpm” Again with VW, they have a 125KW, 350NM 2.0L.
Even the X-Trail with it’s Renault sourced engine produces 110KW, 320NM. Sorry Ford, I don’t care if there is more torque than the segment competitors. This is a far cry from impressive diesel and all competitors here should be working harder to produce more powerful and efficient oilers.

  • Reckless1

Haha, have to agree with the comments about the front end – really looks like a foof-mobile.

Can’t see too many tradies going for that look, or the lack of powah.

It matches the low-spec mitsubishi pretty well – gutless 2.5l, ugly styling….

  • http://skyline The Salesman

    Simon,
    2.5 Litre CRDI from Hyundai – Kia is already here 125KW @ 3,800rpm and 392nM @ 2,000rpm.
Some better stuff on the way.

  • Reckless1

    Err – that’s a p not an f

  • Frontman

Simon surely you are not simple are you???
This particular type of vehicle actually works on Torque!!!
Try hauling a farmers ton of whatever farmers stick inthese things with any of those engines you mentioned. Yes they are fantastic motors in the VW’s & Hyanddry’s for passenger biased vehicles, but when need to crawl through a boggy field or haul a load up a ramge then they do fall short in ability. It is well and truly noted by even the CA team that these motors (read BT/50 reviews) are perfectly suited to the job at hand. I mean heck even the Mondeo 2.5 diseasel in Europe puts out more than these motors but isn’t used because it is NOT suited to the job. Sometimes you really do need to think about why these absolutely stupid motoring engineers don’t put things in like you would, after all didn’t they go to university etc?? BTW did you write the same complaints about the motors in the recent review of the Mazda or is just that this has a Ford badge on it??

  • Minnow

Yeah, Reckless1 we figured, because we all AGREE.

  • Frontman

    Salesman,

    125KW @ 3,800rpm and 392nM @ 2,000rpm.
Okay peaking then, when do thye drop off their peak?

Both the Ford / Mazda Motors hold from 1800 to a tad under 2800. That is why they were chosen. No need for 6 speed g/box’s or anything overly fancy, just a plain simple basic psoven engineering set up. Remember that this is a face lift, the T6 isn’t due for 12 months or more but is a completely new model, so why worry when these motors are “Class Leading”!!!

  • Pablo

Hopefully it will look better in the flesh

  • Rob

Somebody get me bucket, I think I’m going to vomit….. that front end is farking ugly

  • jp

You guys cant be serious….. I’m all for first impressions but gee to write this thing off before even seeing it in the flesh is over doing a bit. These are proven utes with proven set up and echoing Frontman comments are set up for the task at hand. For the price you pay they quite easily match and in some cases out perform there 10K(rough) more exspensive competition in the Navara and Hilux. Majority of commentors here wouldn’t evenconsider purchasing one of these utes anyway – for the simple fact you aren’t in the market so stop commenting on motors and drivetrains you know nothing about or have experienced. End of the day this was only a facelift – atleast you will know a PK from a PJ when it drives down the street unlike the recent mazda facelift – will leave my opinion as too whether it is for the better until have seen it in a yard. Besides the complete aus design will be the one to get.

  • Gibbo

There is only 2 things letting this ute (and the BT50) down: 1: They both still ride on the old platform that previous generation Couriers did meaning that the competition has slightly larger cabs. Secondly it still has that stupid hand break that you have to pull out of the dash – that I always bang my knee on. Other than that the only things that I would add to the wish list on a dual cab 4WD ute is a 6 speed manual box for better performance and fuel economy and the option of a longer style side box like the US Navara.

  • Jake02

i think this is a real attempt at making a ute look like a car and i have to say it looks pretty alright. utes always look akward from the front on, and this is no acception to that. FORD AUSTRALIA LISTEN FROM THIS POINT ON: i hope they introduce the ‘Wildtrack’ version here or something similar to compete with the Mitsubishi Triton GLS (with leather seats and climate control air-con) and to also have electronically-foldable exterior mirrors like the Isuzu D-Max range.

When’s the sister, Mazda BT-50, being revealed?

  • Jake02

also, i know that you can get side airbags on the current Ranger (but side/curtains on the Triton) and I hope this continues. I feel AU standard utes are poorly specced as in Europe they come with everything under the sun, most importantly ESP.

  • omgwot

Ok, don’t get me wrong I’m 100% Ford but that has to be the worst “face” on a car I have seen in a long time. What happened to the tough truck look of the last model. This looks like it has been designed by Disney Pixar to star in the next movie along side Lightning McQueen.
I was so excited when I saw the words Preview and 09 Ford and I clicked the link. When I saw the first picture my eyes nearly popped out of my head and then the smile turned to a look of “wtf were you thinking Ford design dept”… did you steal it from Kia as a joke… is it April 1st?
OK now I’m over the shock I will read the article and hope I read somewhere… got ya..it’s a joke it will look more like the 09 F series

  • Limited Slip

These are good tough utes and this looks good. Funny how you guys are saying it looks ugly but if it had a Hi Lux badge on it you would be saying it looks great. Talk about an over reaction to a first look……are you a bunch of women?

Ford will sell heaps of these, at least it looks different to the boring same old same old styling of most of the utes in this class……..good one Ford.

speaking of mega ugly……..people buy Toyota Yaris’s dont they? Now that is the ugliest car around!!

  • JEKYL & HYDE

    no limited slip,

the front looks like a dogs breakfast.your wages wouldn’t be dependant on at looking good, would it.i showed a bloke this morning who bought a ranger 6 mths ago.you should of seen his face…

  • Limited Slip

Jekyl and Hyde……My mate has a Ranger and he loves the new style………just goes to show ya……and he is buying one when they come out.

  • Falcodore

I think it looks pretty good for a ute, better than the Lolux and much better than that Sh!tsubishi blob of excrement!

Those of you who dont like it can hope that the BT-50 will look better when it gets updated.

  • Dlr1

Frontman… spot on about the engines, peak power is one thing, but if there’s nothing happening below that RPM level then it just wont work off road or with a load on. The C/A off road review of the diesel Tiguan proves this point with revs dying away too quickly (and with it power) once the vehicle starts to bog down in the softer sand. As for the looks i think i’ll reserve my judgement until i see one on the flesh, hopefully the pics don’t do it justice.

  • sleeper

    what happened to ford???

  • ZANDIT

Paint the panels under the headlights down to the fog lights and wallah!!! fpv ranger!!!
Looks good Ford, Be interesting to see how much that wildtrak version is.

  • jp

Just so you guys know who have commented – I am pretty certain the new updated bt-50 was realised at start of 09. You may not have noticed cause not much changed! once again reserve your judgement on the ford till you see one in the metal – they could have done the other extreme like mazda and changed bugger all.

  • trackdaze

Looks like the sepo’s are trying to get impress their 3 bar grill rubbish from the states across the globe.

Europes Kinetic is the way to go Ford. Swallow your pride FOA and accept FOE direction on design & engineering.

Thought the Ranger was supposed to be the first um, truck to get esp?

Agree with the 3litre being a belter. Don’t get suckered into the marketing hype about peak power (particularly high up the rev range in a diesel). The 380nm @1800 is the business.

  • christian

I have one word for the peolpe who do not like the front end.”BULLBAR”

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au/23327/2009-ford-ranger-model-released/ peter

hi all i have a 2008 ranger and i tow a 1600 kg trailer ever day and i forget its on the back most of the time the ranger has more pulling power then most .
i hired a nissan navara what a piece of crap i could’nt tow my trailer it didnt have the balls .
the new ranger looks good im looking at upgrading later this year keep it up ford

  • Steve

    Hi Peter
Well I hope you are either using load levelling arms or have checked the nose weitght on that trailer. The Maximum allowable down weight on the rangers ball is just 75Kg!!!
I have been bitterly disappointed with this little fact – it means towing an off-road camper is next to impossible.

  • Frontman

Ummm wrong steve, Ball weight on ALL Fords is 10%…..
750 is the maximum towable without brakes (ADR settings) rangers without weight distribution are 180kg, with distribution 300kg man / 250 kg Auto and teh1 tonne carry capactiy in the tray is reduced by the ball weight.

Sorry but I like true facts>>>>>>>

  • Steve

    Hi Frontman
You had better check a handbook. The 250kg figure is maximum when fitted with weight distributing hitches.
Without such WDHs it is just 75Kg.
The ball weight figures, 10% etc etc are when used with “an approved load levelling device”
You won’t find this info in the brochures, on their website or in the specifications because they don’t want anyone knowing.
But be assured – it is most certainly on page 4-14 of the BT50 Mazda owners manual.
FYI – without WDHs a HiLux can load 100Kg and a Navara 110Kg.
Basically it comes down to utes being hopeless tow vehicles.

  • Frontman

Sorry Steve I didn’t read the book, I just walked outside and read the Ford Compliance plate on the XLT factory fit tow hitch.

  • Steve

    Yeah Frontman
I fell for the same trap.
Now I have an extracab 4×4 and a Jayco van with 160kg nose weight which I can’t tow offroad!!!! (Weight Hitches are BAD offroad).
The bar itself is very misleading, as are the sales brochures.
BTW I also have airbag suspension fitted as a result of the vehicle pitching like mad when there is anything like a decent load (550kg) in the back. I was almost seasick on a trip from Hay to Orange!
For a carlike ride the Ranger/BT50 from factory is hard to beat – as work ute they leave a lot to be disired.

  • john

I recon it looks good as long as it isn’t in white.

  • paul

we have just brought a wildtrak and it drives like a dream, looks amazing and due to discounts was a great deal. looks heaps better in real life, photos don’t do it justice!

  • Steve (Bris. Australia)

I am about to purchase a brand new 2009 PK “Black Mica” manual XLT crew cab Ranger.

Is there anyone out there who would recommend that I re-consider this model and manufacturer, and look elsewhere for a 4X4 to tow dirtbikes and camping gear, before I sign the bottom line for delivery??

    Cheers,
    Steve

  • http://caradvice.com.au steve

I test drove the Mazda BT 150 and bought the Ford Ranger 2 wheel drive supercab chassis with aluminium tray.
They look tough in the metal and the front end is similar to the Range Rover as well and that is not a poof’s car either.
The price was very good by the way.

  • Graham

we are doing the Canning stock route midyear. Will a Ranger make it. 1000 sand hills, carrying fuel and water, plus camping and food(oh! and drinks). Looking at a duel cab 3L turbo.

  • Bronwyn Schmidt
