2009 Renault Clio Sport F1 Team R27 at MIMS

By Matt Brogan |

The Clio Renault Sport F1 Team R27 will be the star of the Renault stand at this years’ Melbourne International Motor Show.

Following the benchmark of the Clio Renault Sport 197, the launch of the Clio Renault Sport F1 Team R27 promises to take the performance game to a whole new level.

Built at the Renault Sport factory in Dieppe, the Limited Edition Clio Renault Sport R27 is inspired by the FIA World Championship winning-Renault F1 Team, and shares part of its name with the championship winning Grand Prix chassis, the R27.

Continuing Renault’s rich heritage for producing grin-inducing hot hatches, the Clio Renault Sport 197 F1 Team R27 features ‘Cup Chassis’ suspension settings, plus signature 17” charcoal coloured alloy wheels, red brake calipers, Recaro front seats and exclusive Renault F1 Team decals. Only 40 R27’s will be imported into Australia.

The ‘Cup Chassis’ suspension settings on the R27 include a number of enhancements for both track and road driving.

The ride height has been lowered by 7mm compared to the standard Clio Renault Sport 197 to ensure a lower centre of gravity and reduced load transfer for more effective cornering.

Its cornering ability has been improved even further by the springs which have been stiffened by 27 percent at the front and 30 percent at the rear, giving reduced body roll and pitch when cornering.

With a 10 percent increase in bending stiffness and more flexible bump-stops, the double-axis strut suspension system is also more stable when braking and offers greater steering precision when negotiating bends in quick succession.

The R27 is equipped with the standard Clio Renault Sport 197′s robust, powerful Brembo brake system, using 312mm ventilated discs at the front and 300mm solid discs at the rear.

Powered by a normally-aspirated 2.0-litre DOHC 16-valve engine and mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, the R27 offers a wide power band with maximum power of 145kW available at 7,250rpm, with 215Nm of torque at 5,550 rpm.

The Clio Renault Sport 197 F1 Team R27 has standard decals on the front, rear, roof and door to celebrate Renault F1 Team’s Championship victories in 2005 and 2006.

In keeping with its motorsport lineage, the R27 also features red Brembo four-piston brake calipers at the front, Victory Yellow paint (which originally appeared on the Megane F1 Team 225 R26) and exclusive Renault F1 Team badging. Recaro front seats are also standard.

Derived from the world of Formula One, it also boasts a rear air diffuser which channels airflow to increase downforce on the car’s rear end, so counteracting lift. Meanwhile, on the side of the car, extractor vents on the front wings reduce turbulence to optimise the car’s drag co-efficient and facilitate the outflow of under bonnet heat.

The Clio Renault Sport 197 F1 Team R27 offers the same comprehensive standard equipment list as the Clio Renault Sport 197, but in addition to climate-control air conditioning, cruise control (with speed-limiter) and ESP, the Limited Edition adds Cup Chassis signature 17” charcoal coloured alloy wheels, red painted brake calipers, Renault Sport Recaro Seats, a numbered plaque and F1 Team decals.

Recaro front seats feature as standard, offering harness cut-outs for a sporty look as well as a weight saving of six kilograms.

The numbered plate alongside the handbrake leaves no doubt as to the unique sporting heritage of the Clio Renault Sport F1 Team R27.

Clio Renault Sport 197 F1 Team R27 is available  from just $39,990.00 with Victory Yellow paint is the only option at an additional $1,000.

The R27 will be available in three colours, Toro Red, Glacier White and Victory Yellow.

Super, its not that big of a deal! CA are bringing motoring news to one specific website – they dont need to write each of their articles.

  • Mick

Sounds like it will be a pretty fun little hot hatch.

  • Horse

    what a ugly car

    • The Real Car Fanatic

Embarassing for you Horse when it burns your Commodore or Falcon off at the lights!

  • http://skyline The Salesman

Have you ever taken a ride in one of these? It is how i imagine riding on the back of a scared field mouse might feel like, with cornering similar to that of a cat on carpet An absolute mad house of revs and adrenalin. Awesome fun.

  • Anti-spam word: falcon

@ The Salesman, not $40K+ORC worth of “fun” my friend.

The clio is extremely over priced in Australia. That is why they just don\’t sell. They are trying to compete with Mini (which are over priced as well) but at least with the Mini you get BMW quality in the materials they use and also an iconic design. I am comparing what a Clio is worth in Europe about the same price as a Barina, yet they try rip us an new a@#hole here in a Australia and try sell us a $40K+ sardine can and tell us “but it’s fun”.

  • B-Man

    Anti-Spam,
Mini design, yes. BMW quality, no. If you like interior trims flaking away and body rattles that can’t be silenced after 15,000km then go for it! The newer models are slightly better but are still nowhere near BMW fit and finish.

  • James

40 grand for it… too much.

    31~34K maybe..

    30k… ideal.

I like it though just very over priced. For 40K you can import a Skyline Coupe 37GT….

    renault laguna coupe????

  • Phill

How heavy is it?Any performance car article reaily should have the weight aswell as the power and torque.

  • Steve-Poyza

Apparently the Renault Australia have been questioning whether the Laguna coupé should be brought here. Considering the Laguna hatch and estate aren’t selling like they planned, I’d have to say its not coming over, even if the other models were selling well, they’d still be more likely to not bring it.
And also, I don’t get why they never brought the standard Clio to Australia, its their only model that ever sold well here. They then brought the RS version late and they’re selling it for a hefty cost.

  • The Original Tom

Anyway, this car is faster than 2008 WRX around at least one racetrack in Australia, as tested by Motor magazine by something like 1.5 seconds (or more, I can’t remember).

So yeah, $40k is about par if the build quality is there. I’ve not read much objective assessment about this car (this press release is not included of course), so I don’t know if the thing really is squeaky.

I’d certainly consider buying over a soft WRX.

  • The Usual Suspects

Too much power blah blah blah front wheel drive blah blah blah torque steer blah blah blah not AWD blah blah blah – oh ! What’s that – it’s not an Mazda – oooh, great little hot hatch.

  • Alonso

The Renault R27 chassis didn’t even win a race, and it was a championship winning Grand Prix chassis? The R26, on the other hand, fared much better.

  • http://Antilag.com Joe

The Original Tom: Welcome to 2009.

The MY09 WRX would rip this car a 2nd arse in most situations, as opposed to the MY08 WRX.

    • The Real Car Fanatic

Yeah but Tom never mention the MY09 did he, so your comment is redundant, much like you!

  • booter

the clio competitor, 207 GTI is 6500 cheaper, has a better motor with more accessable power…. a test between these two by CA would be great.

WRX’s are for people with kids (4doors) or inferiority complexes

  • http://www.cameralane.com.au exigepower

A beautiful package in Yellow or should I say “Gold” as its $1000 extra, another Car Salesman hike, I thought Red was the most expesive paint,I have driven one …Revvy & Heavy 200Kg more than the old one, 0-100 6.9 thats what weight does…$42,000 & I bet $4000 for the dealer to 1/2 fill the tank,Oh well back into my Exige & Renault F1 Clio “Sniff my Exhaust”

  • James

No Tim they don’t need to write all of their articles… but they should cite them and acknowledge where they came from. You’ll notice that’s what the newspapers do when they use stories from other providers. Using material that isn’t your own just isn’t on especially when CarAdvice has been whining about other websites “taking their news” and rebuking readers who hint that they’re regurgitating press releases as first drives.

  • Nath

    @Booter
    - Motor did a comparison of the 197 (not with Cup suspension which the R27 has), Peugot, Cooper S and Civic Type R in Aug 08. The 197 won the comparo, in closing:

“best blend of looks, performance and practicality. But in terms of chassis dynamics and tactility, the Clio wins comfortably.”

I will note that the Peugot did a better time around Wakefield but failed to score on the driver involvement level.

    @Exigepower
    - I’d hope you would be able to leave a 197 for dead – you’ve got the chassis and a massive power to weight advantage. You’d have to be a really ordinary driver not to. Of course an Exige can’t be had for 197 money either and as for paint, Lotus try and charge $3 or $4k for non-metallic “lifestyle” white paint lol.

  • jav

Nice car to have alot of fun with but it is too overpriced. You can get a Golf GTI for that money and that is one hell of a blast and it has a very classy interior!

  • gengo

exige has a toyota corolla sportivo motor lol and it cost 3 or 4 times the sportivo hahahahaha, wat a dud you are and ive seen and driven this car its awesome and ive compared the 09 wrx which is still soft and would rather this anyday of the week on a track then a wrx

I like the small renaults – they have always been good – I think the duel exhaust and the rear diffuser is a bit over the top but it will probably drive alright.

Small, feisty Renaults rock the hot-hatch party. I’m driving the little Twingo RS at the moment and it’s absolutely amazing to fling around town at speed. For R200k you simply can’t have more fun…
