2009 Mitsubishi Outlander RX special edition
February 18, 2009 by George Skentzos
Mitsubishi has released a special edition version of its Outlander SUV which boasts a raft of aesthetic, functional and safety-oriented extras.
Limited to just 300 units nationwide, the Outlander RX is aimed squarely at some of the more flamboyant SUVs on the market.
It is powered by a sports-tuned 3.0-litre V6 MIVEC engine which develops 162kW and 276Nm at 4000rpm, which returns fuel consumption of 10.9-litres per 100km.
This is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with a “Sports Mode” sequential style shift change with steering wheel mounted shift paddles.
The exterior features 18-inch RAYS alloy wheels, front, rear and side air dams, chrome exterior door handles and mirrors, HID headlamps and headlamp washers.
Buyers will have the choice of either Black Mica or Cool Silver exterior finish available exclusively to the Outlander RX.
Inside, the Outlander RX adds further technological additions including Smart key entry, Bluetooth hands free phone capability, a Rockford Fosgate premium audio system and Mitsubishi Multi-Communications System with satellite navigation.
Standard safety includes driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags, and reversing camera.
Mitsubishi’s Active Stability Control with Traction Control (ASTC) and All Wheel Control (AWC) is also standard which allows drivers to switch between 2WD and AWD at the turn of a dial.
The Outlander RX is available now from over 200 Mitsubishi dealerships Australia with pricing yet to be announced.

Yuck! That ricer body kit sure is a turn off! Much rather a turbo Forester..
Same body kit as the JDM spec Outlander Roadest (Yes, such model exist.).
Would be nice to see more Aussie special edition Mitsubishis based on their JDM counterparts.
Also, wish Mitusbishi would sell the Delica D:5 down under, seeing that the previous gen 4WD model is popular with the grey import market.
Mitsubishi sells the Delica D:5 in New Zealad as a single grade, full-spec car (But not the 4WD model.). It is on the Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand website for those who want to have a look.
Got a black one out the front of our dealership at the moment and it looks good.
Did Mitsubishi write that article? It sure sounded like they did. I’ll give you an example you wrote: ‘powered by a sports-tuned 3.0-litre V6 MIVEC engine which develops 162kW and 276Nm at 4000rpm’. First off there’s no change in power over the base 3.0 model, so how is that sporty at all? Secondly is it really necessary to use Mitsubishi’s marketing speak to describe there ‘Sports Mode’ auto? A base model Falcon has a similar set-up for its auto! So I ask again did Mitsubishi write the article or is your website just a place for payed advertisements? If this is true maybe a name change to Manufactures Advice would be more suitable.
spoiler kit takes away the whole point of owning an suv, you couldnt take it on sand or mud because you would rip the front spoiler off straight away!!, you would be much better of buying a proper sports station wagon, or forester XT..
What have they done to my beautiful outlander :(
162kW in a modern 3.0 V6 is pretty average performance when a 2003 Accord V6 has 177kW (185 with V-Power fuel). Also the bodykit looks like it was bolted on by a “yoof” on a UK council estate. The alloys look ok though.
If you guys seen this in black with some 20-22’s under it you’d think it was an “pimpin” car LoL. How many people buy outlanders for offroading anyways?
this thing is going to date so quickly – fast fwd to 12-24 months time, and it will be a disaster for whoever buys one. The kit is just so tacky and try hard.
I find that not many companies/car manufacturers/people actually know what makes an alloy wheel look good on one particular car or another. These wheels have no ‘dish’ to them, hence appear 2 dimensional and cheap, like an afterthought – they do not tie itto the whole design of the car at all. Have a look at most BMW’s and it’s no coincidence most of their cars look good with 17, 18, 19″ wheels – and it’s because of the 3 dimensional quality of most of them, and the fact that the wheels are designed to compliment the design of the car. A lot of aftermarket wheels look like absolute crap on the cars the have been fitted to, becuse the wheel design itself is so bad, the wrong rim size has been selected, and the style just doesn’t suit the car. This Outlander is a classic example of how NOT to do it.
Barrrrfffffff
what the hell….looks like they squashed and smashed a full sized pajero with a wrecking yard compactor….
wrong wrong wrong….try again…
Good damn that’s ugly, What have they done?
Looks pretty good i reckon, have you got high standards Darren??
YOUR KILLING ME……SPORTWAGON…
Hey everyone. Buying a RX and looking forward too it. First up, the silver looks awful compared too the black so that pic does nuthin for it, second, its a very safe car for accidents so thats a bonus, thirdly, the technology it is equipped with is fun and up to date, forthly, If you actually took time out to view the car before commenting on it you would notice that the body kit is just enough for viewing pleasure but not over the top (on the black anyway) and it is still high enough for beach running unless u feel like using your $40000 4wd as a makeshift sand boarding automobile then yeah not a good idea, and finally its a wicked piece of equipment and im excited about purchasing it. I own a skyline and after driving that with its power, the Outlander isnt too bloody bad! So view the black and u wont be disappointed!!!
This ones for Hal. The kit is pretty much the same as any kit out there for any car. Its no different whether its on the Outlander or not. Also i dont know if you’ve been outside ur house recently but there is quite a vast range of wheels out there in the market…….replacing them is not that bigger deal darlin’. The public like it or they dont…easy enuf.
I prefer the concept Evolander styling kit… this looks a little tacky.. still prefer my original outlander :)
Agreed Milobob, it does look tacky on the silver but the black looks different for some reason…dunno y…just does. That other kit is wicked but looks a lil plain for my liking, guess with a bit of design work, some cash and a lil imagination it would come out better.
Rxing, I leave my house every day thanks, Darlin’. And every day I see people who have absolutely no eyesight and/or design flair. The type of wheels that people either choose to put on their cars, or think look good on the cars they choose to buy, is just criminal.
It’s always going to be each to their own taste, but I’m sorry this kit does absolutely nothing for the Outlander, and wheels are unimaginative and just do not work with the kit. Sorry to those who may have bought/ordered one, no offence intended. If you’re happy, then good luck to you.
I agree the sliver does nothing for it! i have a black one i pick up next week and it looooooks a million times better!!! there is really no different to the size of the car not that you would go hard 4wd in it! i have just sold a 2007 outlander which i loved but the new technology in this is fantastic! i guess everyone has different thoughts on how a car should look but honestly i cant wait to get it! im also excited because i have upgraded from the 2.4 to the v6 and it is more fuel effective on the roads i drive on!!
this time next week im the proud owner of a rx outlander!!
well well, i just picked up my blue VRX on Tuesday and I am glad I got it. The RX is differently nice. Different people have different taste. Which is good, otherwise we’ll all be driving white Corollas. I reckon the mags would look good on my VRX and bit jealous about the MMCS and reverse camera. I would like one too..
Well I love it!!! I have been researching and test driving all sorts of middle range Four Wheel Drives the Outlander is definately the best out of all of them. I am looking forward to my new car (in black). My theory is safety and performance over looks any day (I agree that the body kit is a little too much but you can always ask for a different one when you buy it).
Hey its good to see all the outlander lovers coming out of the woodwork….i steph am also about to become the proud owner of an rx outlander in black (if the banks would hurry up that is) and must say im hating the waiting. Its a great car for safety and technology too. (blue would have been nice in the rx) (bugga).
There are a lot of big black 4wd’s coming out and i must say this car is gonna be fantastic!!!!!!!
i have been driving mine for a few weeks! its such a great car !! it isnt hungry on fuel there is no difference in fuel use between my old outlander and this one!!! i drove it on a big drive today it was soooo smooth and fantastic it got down to 8.9 l of fuel per 100 km not tooo shabby at all!!! i love the pur of a v6 !! im in love!!! outlanders are the best cars after driving them for the last two years i totally wouldnt own another car!!!
Am picking up mine next Saturday. Yippee! Am excited. Can I ask those that own one whether the mat comes standard? Forgot all about that.
My goodness! I thought the Outlander was already a bit too visually challenged, that thing is in the running for the worlds ugliest car! If you buy one, you have zero taste.
Steph, if this is your idea of motoring nirvana, you have obviously not driven many different cars. Trust me, the Outlander’s not bad at all but of all the compact SUVs, it’s near the bottom of the list.
Hey steph….dont tease me!!! lol im still waiting on the finances to come through….sloooow ppl. But its mine though. yay!! must say im a lil apprehensive as i have driven a nissan skyline for 2 yrs now so a big jump for me! Glad to hear about the petrol from someone other than a car dealer!! lol. again ppl not seeing the black model so wrong judgement calls on the outlander not talking to any1 in particular ALEX!!!! Hey caroline..wat mat are u talking about? Let me know how ya go!!! Im so jealous…i hate waiting <<<<no patience! lol
Rxing and Steph, good choice with the black. I haven’t got mine yet, I’ll have to wait for one more week. Rxing, I was asking about the car mats as I forgot to ask if it came with the car standard or I have to pay for it extra. I can’t believe I forgot to ask them to throw in free car mats (if in fact, it’s not included). Hope your bank hurries up! LOL There’s nothing worse than the waiting!
I had my car mats from my prevous outlander they are not standard !! im very happy my outlander now has my purple nsw plates on it :D its a joy to drive! i ended up with front tinted windows and rear park assist added as my previous outlander had rear park assist couldnt live without it even with a camera its great!!!
Alex when i looked into svu’s i can tell you the outlander came up at the top of the list!! each to there own! this is my second outlander and wouldnt have anything else!!
Hi Caroline and Steph, FINALLY got my rx, had it now for a month (been loving the drive and newness that i forgot to write) lol. The mats yeah dont come standard as im sure u have found out by now….bumma though. just bought a pair of crappy ones for the time being. The camera has helped already as my cat walked across the back when i was reversing out the garage so saved his life there so im more than chuffed bout that.( i swear he’s deaf and blind) Got paint protection on it too looks sooooo shiny all the time and no hands on washing just a spray in the bay and a microfibre cloth to dry (no chamois) so far no swirlys. Any ways stay in touch, that makes 147 black rx owners to find lmao! gets a lot of attention too. very hollywood lmao.
The new RX will be my third Outlander and I can’t wait!
Hey Rxing, Steph, Caroline…
Join me to the Outlander Club as well!! I bought RX a month ago (Black) and damn is it fine. Hotness factor is way up the top… like everywhere u go… people kinda stop and stare. Feels kinda awesome when you step out of it and you just can’t stop smiling.
Rxing gotta ask you something mate… i got the paint protection as well but for some reason mine doesn’t shine all that much and my bro-in-law bought a 380 from the same dealership and he got the protection as well… but damn like his ride is full sparkly. When you touch the paint it’s actually really smoooth… but with mine its not smooth at all. Another thing water runs right down his car and water stays on my car. Funny thing is his ride doesn’t have the “Wax Guard” sticker on it while mine does… you reckon the dealership has done something dodgy??
Btw… i reckon we all should go for a spin sometime with our black RX!! there is only 300 of ‘em n damn we gonna be kickin some arse!
