Roll-Royce Wraith convertible: Drophead variant imminent

A convertible version of the Roll-Royce Wraith will be the next new model from the luxury British marque, according to its boss.

Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Muller-Otvos admitted to UK publication Auto Express that developing a new model in the Wraith family would take “some time”, pointing towards a debut in the second half of the decade.

“The design [of Wraith] certainly lends itself to a Drophead Coupe, and I think that will be the next variant,” Muller-Otvos said.

The CEO of the Goodwood-based coachbuilder went on to speak more definitely about the Wraith convertible, insisting that priority needed to be given to the people who have been waiting for the Wraith coupe (pictured above).

“The next thing is Drophead Wraith, but bespoke orders are the priority,” he said.

The revelation comes just weeks after Rolls-Royce South and East Asia Pacific general manager Dan Balmer told CarAdvice the Wraith’s structure and underpinnings – based on those of the four-door Ghost – could support an open-top body style.

“There is potential for us to do something later on,” Balmer said.

“It would be a few years away… We need that time to understand what Wraith is and what that direction means for us, and then from there we can develop new versions.”

The Rolls-Royce Wraith, powered by a 465kW/800Nm 6.6-litre V12 capable of launching the luxury two-door from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds, will arrive in Australian showrooms around September, with an approximate price tag of $645,000.

An eventual convertible version would undoubtedly demand a price premium, although would comfortably slot in below the only other open-top model in Rolls-Royce’s current line-up, the $1,019,000 Phantom Drophead (pictured above).
