Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake eyes production: report

A Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake looks even more likely to expand the new A-Class family beyond the current three-car line-up, with the brand’s design chief all but guaranteeing its future addition.

Mercedes-Benz head of design Gorden Wagener has indicated that the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class hatch, CLA sedan and upcoming GLA SUV are near certain to be joined by a baby CLS Shooting Brake version of the CLA, telling What Car?, “The CLA is a four-door coupe as well, so why not do it?”

Long expected to sit alongside the CLA sedan – in an identical move to the CLS Shooting Brake (pictured below) expansion of the CLS sedan – the CLA Shooting Brake (pictured top as a computer-generated image) will follow behind the recently released A-Class hatch, CLA four-door coupe that lands locally later in the year and the production version of the GLA crossover, seen in concept form at this week’s Shanghai auto show, due to launch in Australia in 2014.

Whether the Shooting Brake variant will adopt the 265kW/450Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine of the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG sedan that was unveiled at last month’s 2013 New York auto show is yet to be revealed, although seems likely to follow in the footsteps of the larger CLS63 AMG.
