Porsche signs tennis ace Maria Sharapova as brand ambassador

Porsche has signed tennis star and glamour girl Maria Sharapova as a brand ambassador for the next three years.

The partnership will see the 26-year-old Russian ace play a leading role in the German sports car brand's global communications campaign between now and 2016.

Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller said the four-time Grand Slam winner, currently ranked number two in the world, was the perfect fit for the brand.

“Maria Sharapova is an exceptional athlete. She combines top performance in her sports with elegance and power. These are precisely the qualities that are embroiled in our sports cars,” Mueller said.

“Her profile and charisma are an ideal fit for Porsche. She is also highly respected around the world and enjoys an outstanding reputation.”

Sharapova is no stranger to the brand – she took home a white Porsche Carrera S Cabriolet after winning last year’s Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

The current French Open champion and London Olympic Games silver medallist said she was honoured to be linked with Porsche.

“This is a really special day for me,“ Sharapova said.

“I have had the privilege to be associated with some of the best brands in the world, but now to be partners with Porsche is such an amazing honour.”

Sharapova has been linked to a number of brand’s since turning professional in 2001, including Motorola, Canon, Tag Heuer, Tiffany, Nike, Gatorade, and fellow premium car brand Land Rover.
