MG CS concept: baby SUV debuts in Shanghai

The MG CS concept has made its international debut at the 2013 Shanghai auto show.

Previewed last week in a series of teaser sketches, the sporty CS concept is understood to give us our clearest look yet at the iconic British – now Chinese-owned – brand's first SUV.

Styled by MG global design director Anthony Williams-Kenny, the company says the CS concept “oozes British design flair while embracing the sporting DNA of MG”.

Unique to the MG CS concept are its complex headlights, which feature glass shards designed to refract light in different colours and directions.

Large alloy wheels, underbody protection panels and a high ground clearance give the urban crossover a look of off-road capability, while its compact dimensions promise practicality for everyday city use.

Designed for “young, fashion-conscious people”, MG says the production car based on the CS concept will “expand the global reach of the MG brand”.

MG has not released any details about the CS concept’s powertrains or specifications at this stage.

At last week’s local relaunch, MG Australia revealed its plans to introduce a compact SUV to its line-up in 2014, joining the MG 6 small car and the upcoming city-sized MG 3 hatch, due in late 2013.
