Utes: March 2013 sales overview

The Toyota HiLux has cemented its place atop the ute sales charts for another month, with March allowing the Japanese workhorse to further extend its 2013 sales lead over its rivals.

The Toyota HiLux (3127) led a first quarter charge by the commercial models that saw three utes slide into March’s highest selling cars list – HiLux second, Nissan Navara (2499) fifth and Mitsubishi Triton (1992) seventh.

The Ford Ranger (1685) fell out of the top-seller’s top 10 but improved one spot in year-to-date sales for the segment compared to February, now sitting in third position.

The 1183 Mazda BT-50 vehicles sold in March were enough to keep it in fifth, the Holden Colorado (1120) in sixth, and narrow the gap in yearly sales between the two to 101 vehicles.

A good month for the Isuzu D-Max (827) and Toyota Landcruiser PU/CC (801) saw the two secure seventh and eighth place respectively while after missing the cut last month, the Volkswagen Amarok with 488 sales, squeezed into the top 10 ahead of the Holden Commodore ute with its 433 units sold.

Despite managing to sell 353 Ford Falcon utes in March, the local tradey failed to make the top 10, finishing in 12th place behind the Chinese-built Great Wall V200/240 (359).

While March has resulted in three of the top five year-to-date top-seller’s being commercial utes – HiLux third, Navara fourth and Ranger up to fifth from a previous 10th – in the segment that's seen 4x4 pick-up sales increase by 35 per cent year-to-date and 4x2 increase by six per cent, the battle between the Ranger and Triton will be one to watch.
