BMW X6 wins German Four by Four of the Year
February 10, 2009 by Matt Brogan
The new BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupé has won German magazine Off-Road’s ‘Four by Four of the Year 2009’ in the Crossover category.
Many of the attributes that helped win the X6 this prestigious award are those reflected in CarAdvice’s very own review including outstanding driving dynamics, coupé-like styling, high levels of grip and driving pleasure.
In a double win for BMW, the X5 also achieved a podium position in the Luxury SUV category.
“The outstanding driving dynamics and unique design of the BMW X6 are obviously the driving forces behind its popularity,” said BMW Group Australia Managing Director, Guenther Seemann. “We have seen a similar level of enthusiasm and passion for the BMW X6 in Australia. Since launch in the latter part of 2008 we have delivered close to 350 examples. Australian luxury vehicle buyers are voting with their wallets. The BMW X6 raises agility, steering precision, stability and traction to new dimensions in a vehicle of this size. So it is not surprising Australian drivers love it.”
The application of BMW EfficientDynamics technology to the X6 also results in low fuel consumption and reduced emissions of CO2. The X6 range comprises petrol and diesel six-cylinder engines (BMW X6 xDrive35i and xDrive35d), as well as the just-arrived twin turbo 300 kW V8 petrol powered X6 xDrive50i. BMW EfficientDynamics permits the BMW X6 to achieve efficiency that until recently would have been regarded as inconceivable for its category and performance class.
BMW will soon introduce a further innovative X Series member, in the form of the production version of the recently unveiled BMW Concept X1. This vehicle will create a new premium all-wheel drive compact

X6 is awesome I agree, but Off orader of the year? Off road ability must not be a big part of the assessment criteria.
sorry, but I simply can’t stand this car – only my opinion, but it has to be the ugliest car BMW have ever done.
Your kidding! Some people have more money than sense.
HAL, the category was for german cars only, so what other choices do they have? Cayenne?
Dan,
Other Choices include WV Toureg, Benz GL, ML(with offroad kit) etc…
This is an awesome car.
I visited a number of dealerships last weekend just having a bit of a squiz at the latest models on offer – including BMW; and I can say that despite the angle of the rear windscreen the view out the back is adequate ; the cabin is quite spacious and is fairly easy to get in and out of; then theres the way it sounds [droool]… all in all it makes me wonder why they persist with the X5
All that this proves is that Germans look at cars through the bottom of a couple of half-full pots of beer.
Ive been trying to find the other contenders but unable to find the article anywhere else.
Dont care LUVVVVVVVVV this car .
Hey Bav (.)(.), take your beer pots off. There were no other contenders, that’s why this affront to aesthetics won.
I may like Germans Captain but I DONT DO BEER !
So Captain you think it won on looks ? I would love to read more on the story to find out just how it was judged and what it was judged against.
Theres a difference between rivals and contenders.
In almost evert market sector cars have a number of rivals however there is usually one or two cars that are so far ahead of the competition that the rest aren’t really contenders more like wannabes as they are trying to beat the [iconic] market leaders
The X6 has a number of rivals such as the Audi Q7; VW Touareg; Merc-Benz ML and Porsche Cayenne.. Yet; whether or not they were/are of the same standard as the X6 in terms of design performance/handling; features etc determines whether or not they are contenders – that is are they worth considering?
It obvioulsy has that certain something which made the judges go for the X6.. although it would have been close
Still think it looks weird in picture. Maybe look better in person. I do agree though awesome attributes!
Surely the Audi Q5 should have won? As others are pointing out, the X6 can’t go off road and I bet there will only ever be about two that do and they’ll be magazines having a laugh. The Cayenne wouldn’t qualify, neither would the Q7 and that’s basically it for German cars that can go off road. The Q5 should have won…
An X6 drove down St Georges Terrace in Perth a few days ago, and everyone was staring as it roared past. With the angel eyes on and the sound emanating from the engine this puppy was sending a message “look at me!” I was too far away to see what model it was.
I look forward to test driving one. I love the looks – it seems this car is polarising like the M6 (which I also love).
