The new mini-MPV from Renault is due to arrive in showrooms later this year a few months after the Mégane hatch, with current speculation suggesting it will share similar design traits to the Mégane.

However, wearing the latest in car camouflage fashion, even at point blank range very little of Patrick le Quément’s design was revealed to our photographers.

There will again be two versions of the mid-sized people mover – a five-seat Scenic and an extended wheelbase Grand Scenic with seven seats.

For interior practicality, expect a new generation of sliding seat origami to offer intelligent stowage solutions for passengers and luggage.

Lucky they did not fit white wall tyres, they might completely disappear into the background. Is it just me or are mini MPV’s becoming the latest craze?

  2. Frontman says:

Nah jsut you and Kia……… :-)
(or is that just hope that those funny little korean version of Prairie’s or Numbuses are going to find new homes :p)

Not in Australia, it seems, Salesman. While they have long been big sellers in Europe, mini MPVs struggle here. Not quite sure why, but we have seen the demise of the original Carens, Zafira etc. And the sales in the category are falling from their already low level. E.g. Renault sold no Grand Scenics at all last month, according to VFacts, and Citroen only sold 11 Grand Picasso’s. Maybe Aussies find a mini MPV too wussy [sp.?], or consider it too much of a “surrender” car [as in "I am now a family man, and have given up on life"]?

Don’t misunderstand me: I think this is a sad thing. I reckon mini MPVs are well suited to many groups of drivers here, and we’d all be better off if many SUV buyers went for this category instead. My wife adn I had a Zafira for four years and now regret we sold it for a 97 X-Trail. The Zafira would be high on the list of cars we most liked owning. Now I would love to have a Rondo – if it survives the current market blues, and if KIA introduce cruise control and a diesel, or a better petrol motor.

I have it on good authority that a diesel motor will come about this year in Rondo. Not sure if it will increase sales, i guess we will see.

  5. Peter M says:

Thanks for that info., Salesman. Reinforces what I’ve heard: Sept. 09? How about cruise control? We wouldn’t be without it now: it’s great on our roads.

What’s the USE of a Mini MPV? The third row is sooo squishy you get squished and the cargo room is sooo tight you can only put like TWO shopping bags in there. If you want a utility vehicle that doesn’t cost you the fuel get a Nissan Dualis, yes my daddy has one yes. Or maybe a Lexus 450h? Or a cheaper Mitsu Outlander with 7 seat option if you need. not much more expensive than Scenic, grand or no Grand.

  7. Cupid Stunt says:

Looks like it’s wearing a Burkka from behind. Some will says that’s racist but its stating a factual observation in the realms of humour!!!

Not sure I really understand the mini MPV thing. Save your money and buy the Estate (sorry) Wagon version.

Bet there’s a shed load of manufacturers testing cars that are going to sell anymore due to the downturn.

  8. Steve-Poyza says:

This car has recently been revealed. the Grand Scenic has such an air of elegance! I’m not too sure if I like the “sportier” regular model.

Anyways, hope to see it coming to Australia soon to replace the current model (which seem pretty outdated by now, Renault’s design philosophy has moved on a fair bit since then).
