Alpine LM P2: Renault-backed Le Mans racer revealed

The Alpine LM P2 prototype racecar has been revealed, as the Renault-backed team readies for an assault on Le Mans in 2013.

Teased two weeks ago, the Alpine LM P2 racer is based on an Alpine chassis with a 368kW Nissan-supplied V8 engine and a six-speed sequential X-Trac gearbox strapped to it.

Measuring 4610mm long and 1995mm wide and weighing 900kg, the LMP2 class prototype can reach a top speed of 330km/h and stop equally as impressively thanks to a carbon brake setup from Brembo.

After a 35-year absence from endurance racing, the #36 LM P2 will see Alpine compete in the five-round 2013 European Le Mans Series (ELMS) championship, highlighted by the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance event at the 13.6km Circuit de la Sarthe in France.

The return of the Alpine name to endurance racing is part of the brand’s re-emergence strategy under the title Societe des Automobiles Alpine-Caterham – the joint venture announced in November last year between Renault and British sports car company Caterham, due to launch its first car in 2016.

Societe des Automobiles Alpine-Caterham CEO Bernard Ollivier said, the unveiling of the Alpine LM P2 marks the beginning of the company’s next phase.

“It will turn a wheel for the first time very soon, and its maiden race will follow shortly afterwards.

We can hardly wait to see our brand’s colours in action.”

Sharing the driving over the season will be 24-year-old Nelson Panciatici and 29-year-old Pierre Ragues, with 34-year-old Tristan Gommendy joining for the 24-hour race run over June 22-23.

The Alpine LM P2 will have its first competitive outing at round one of the ELMS at Silverstone in England on April 13.
