NHTSA unveils SaferCar app for iPhones

The US Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a new iOS app for iPhones and iPod Touches, providing consumers with real-time access to vehicle safety information and vehicle safety complaint services.

Linked to the NHTSA's SaferCar.gov website, the SaferCar app allows users to search through five-star safety-rated vehicles by make and model, find recall information, file a vehicle safety complaint, get directions to child seat inspection and installation stations and subscribe to receive automatic notices about vehicle recalls.

NHTSA administrator David Strickland said timely, accurate, and accessible safety data is the lifeblood of the agency's work.

“The new SaferCar app literally puts the latest in vehicle safety information directly in the hands of consumers.”

US transportation secretary Ray LaHood said with safety being the department’s highest priority, it is always working to find new and better ways for people to access relevant safety information.

"This app takes advantage of the latest technology to ensure that consumers have the real-time information they need to buy safe, drive safe and stay safe," LaHood said.

The NHTSA says while the app is so far only available on Apple devices, development is already underway for a version compatible with the Android interface.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) offers an app with up-to-date recall information for local vehicles, although crash-test information from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) is currently only available online.
