And the 4-Wheel USA team conquered the worlds biggest glacier 20 years ago in petrol Broncos. You could mod just about anything to do the job but a good base helps a lot and these hiluxes do look cool.

Think it's funny how one of the most reliable manufacturers, known for their build quality is being slated. You wouldn't get an american machine capable of doing this. If you think about it, I'm European and I don't think they are built with paper and cardboard. I wouldn't pay the money for any american car, the interiors of high spec, top end american cars are so low quality I wouldn't expect to see them in a Seat Ibiza 1.2 3cylinder!
I doubt many vehicle electronics outside of Japan would make it all those miles in -30.

Actually the first car to cross Antarctica was a modified E series Ford Van. Toyo would like you to believe that they are the only ones capable of this sort of thing.

It's barely a hilux anymore. The one they sent to the north pole had $100,000 pounds spent on modding it so if these are the same as the red one a good start to buying the kit would be to sell your house!

Impressive, they look like a whole lot of fun too. Just this the design is just great, but then again Toyota does great things with their 4x4's

hi guys.
I know a few things about these trucks. They are toyotas, but toyota didn't have anything to do with sending them to antarcta. They were bought from Toyota in Iceland. Arctic Trucks modifys many diffrent trucks, toyotas, nissans, izusus, MB G-wagons and more.

What was done to these trucks:

front suspension:
front suspension lowered and moved forward. Heavy duty Koni dampers and heavy duty springs.

rear suspension:
axle moved back, leaf springs from a Tundra fitted, Koni dampers.

lower ratio, arb lockers front and rear, 60 mm body lift, 9,5 inch rear diff from a HD80 land cruiser, extra fuel tanks, second transferbox (toyota).

To make room for the tires the inner archers were made bigger.

That's about it.

So the engine, transmission, steering, frame, drive shafts, brakes, suspension arms are all stock toyota hilux.

The hilux trucks were chosen because the customer (amundsen omega race) and arctic trucks thought the hilux was the best for the job

I saw one of them at a 4x4 show in iceland before they left, and they are mean!

Re; Dlr1 Says:
February 8th, 2009 at 7:59 pm - Ice Truckers...

Nah, watched about half a show of that sensationalised crap and had enough.

On Topic, I personally dont see the need for an extensively modified small ute (artic truck) towing a trailer when historically a 4x4 truck with larger tyres has done the same job. Backing out of a jam towing a trailer in a blizzard under slippery conditions is clearly not easy.
