$4m Japanese supercar pile-up could see 10 charged

A multi-car pile-up involving about $4 million dollars worth of supercars that occurred in Japan in December 2011 could result in up to 10 people being charged.

According to reports from Sports Nippon, the 61-year-old lead driver of a supercar pack lost control of his Ferrari leading to a crash valued at $3.8 million that involved eight Ferraris, one Lamborghini and at least one Mercedes-Benz, in what was at the time dubbed "the world's most expensive car crash".

Japanese police are looking to charge 10 drivers linked to the incident, aged between 38 and 61, on suspicion of violating traffic laws, with cases sent to prosecutors last week. Whether charges are laid against the drivers or not rests with the prosecutors, and is yet to be decided.

Police say the 10 drivers were exceeding the speed limit and/or not paying enough attention to the road at the time of the incident.

The pile-up occurred with the drivers reportedly on their way to a supercar event in Hiroshima. There were no fatalities.
