Toyota Kluger: next-gen SUV to debut in New York

The all-new Toyota Kluger will make its world premiere later this month at the New York auto show, following confirmation by the Japanese manufacturer.

Details are light on the third-generation Toyota Kluger, badged Highlander in most overseas markets, but improvements over the current, six-year-old SUV are set to be many, including upgraded engines and drivetrains, fresh styling and enhanced interior and safety technology.

Toyota Australia’s Mike Breen told CarAdvice the new Toyota Kluger is assured for local showrooms but not likely to arrive before mid-2014.

In Australia the Kluger starts at $39,990 and is offered with front- and four-wheel drive, five and seven seats and with a single 201kW/337Nm 3.5-litre V6 powerplant tied to a five-speed automatic transmission.

More details will be revealed at the car’s unveiling in New York on March 27.
