Kia GT eyeing production

The rear-wheel-drive Kia GT performance sedan concept is looking like a strong contender to become a production reality.

The four-seater, four-door Kia show car revealed at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show is arguably the South Korean brand’s most ambitious car yet.

Nearly two years on at this week’s 2013 Geneva motor show, Kia’s design boss Peter Schreyer told a group of Australian media that the Kia GT may be built.

“It is still under strong discussion,” said Schreyer.

“I think everyone in the company wants it. We’re working on it. I think it would be clever if we had that in our product range.

“I think Kia needs to stretch in that direction to get more substance. We need to belong to ‘the club’.”

Schreyer admitted Kia could save costs by sharing architecture with parent company Hyundai – where Schreyer is now also president of design – though he has also stated that the two brands must be differentiated by more than just styling.

The Kia GT concept featured Rolls-Royce-style suicide rear doors, aero design themes, and was powered by a 290kW/534Nm 3.3-litre turbocharged V6 tied to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
