Chrysler to sell off Viper brand

Chrysler has had three offers to buy its Dodge Viper sports car business, as a separate entity, co-President Jim Press revealed today.

The unnamed parties have been in discussion with Chrysler since the operation was put up for sale in August as part of the company's strategy to avoid bankruptcy.

Chrysler must submit a restructuring plan to the US Treasury by February 17 and demonstrate its longer-term viability by March 31 in order to preserve a US$4 billion federal loan.

A possible sale by the March 31 deadline however does not look likely with 110 employees at the Viper factory in Detroit facing an uncertain wait.

Chrysler sold 1172 Vipers in the United States last year. Last month, Viper sales rose 74 percent from a year earlier to 127 units
