Chrysler to sell off Viper brand

February 5, 2009 by Matt Brogan

Chrysler has had three offers to buy its Dodge Viper sports car business, as a separate entity, co-President Jim Press revealed today.

The unnamed parties have been in discussion with Chrysler since the operation was put up for sale in August as part of the company’s strategy to avoid bankruptcy.

Chrysler must submit a restructuring plan to the US Treasury by February 17 and demonstrate its longer-term viability by March 31 in order to preserve a US$4 billion federal loan.

A possible sale by the March 31 deadline however does not look likely with 110 employees at the Viper factory in Detroit facing an uncertain wait.

Chrysler sold 1172 Vipers in the United States last year. Last month, Viper sales rose 74 percent from a year earlier to 127 units

Oh, looks like FIAT got sniffed on that one, last time i checked it was a part of Chrysler.

Anyway, with the tiny sales its not really that important, still a brutal car, gota LOVE V10’s

Here we go, time for slice and dice.

  3. lazybones says:

Hang on, don’t Fiat own Ferrari. So doesn’t it makes sense to chop dodge. The Viper is the only decent motor in the Dodge brand.

  4. AAA says:

FIAT’s going to milk Chrysler dry. Just watch. Like how FIAT milked US$2 billions out of GM.

  5. Mac says:

Fiat are not buying a stake in Chrysler. The will not own them – it is simply a strategic partnership.

  6. DBA says:

Fiat is getting 31% of Chrysler for letting them use their small car platforms, not a stratigic partnership. Pretty good deal for not spending a cent.
