Hyundai Genesis Coupe & i30cw to feature at MIMS

February 5, 2009 by Matt Brogan

The all-new Hyundai Genesis Coupe and i30cw (cross wagon) will feature as headline acts at the Hyundai stand of this year’s Melbourne International Motor Show.

Hyundai to showcase new Genesis Coupe

The Genesis Coupe is the first rear-wheel-drive performance coupe in Hyundai’s history, and is a purpose-built sport coupe to be made available with two performance enhanced engines.

A 2.0-litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder will feature in the entry model coupe with the range topping model to receive an all-aluminium DOHC, 3.8-litre ,V6 powerplant.

The V6 engine will launch the Genesis Coupe from 0-100km/h in just under six seconds, in keeping with its mission to be the most exciting attainable sports coupe on the road.

Other features of the Genesis Coupe include electronic stability control, traction control system, front, side and side-curtain air bags, active front head restraints, keyless entry, power windows, door locks and mirrors, cruise control and Bluetooth.

The new i30cw (cross wagon) will represent all the features of Hyundai’s award winning i30 hatch but with greater luggage capacity thanks to a slightly longer wheelbase.

The i30cw is 230mm longer and 40mm taller than the hatch, offering the versatility of a hatchback with more room for rear passengers and cargo.

Melbourne International Motor Show runs from 27 February to 9 March at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

The Genesis sounds great on paper!

Any ideas on when it will arrive here? I have heard 2010 mentioned, but I don’t know how true that is.

It would also be interesting to know what price it will kick off at.

Something around $36-38K would be extremely competitive I feel. Cheaper than XR5 Turbo, MPS, GTI etc….but with rear wheel drive and genuine coupe looks. (Current Tiburon kicks off at $34990)

I would pick this car anyday over it’s front wheel drive rivals!

  2. Howie-VL says:

Looks good. and RWD turbo is great. Who would have thought, a Hyundai drift car ha ha.

  3. David Twomey says:

Unfortunately the current Genesis chassis is not engineered for right-hand-drive but CarAdvice understands the next one will be!

  4. Adam says:

    Thanks David,

    That’s a real bummer!

  5. Dlr1 says:

Genesis not engineered for RHD? Just goes to show that the bigger you get the more stupid you become. That is exactly the sort of decision (ie not engineering LHD and RHD from the start) that the Big 3 have always been known for and recently Toyota, Nissan and now Hyundai have decided to follow. And they wonder why most of the major automakers are currently losing money.

  6. FRUGAL_ONE says:

Be nice if they gave an idea of the prices.

Will the wagon be $1k more like the Commodore?

Looks like the Coupe has the market all to itself [for now]

    Cheers

    F-0

  7. lazybones says:

Adam, i’d expect the coupe to start at 40k. Its there premium sports offering. Hyundai are trying to break the cheap and cheerful image with this one.

  8. Jimmy says:

The front end styling of the Genesis really is a rip off of the Lexus is250.

It’s good to see Hyundai putting a bit of thought into their cars for once.

  9. Marty says:

I appreciate the comments regarding LHD & RHD. Considering it is not a concept car though, it doesn’t really make sense that they would bring it to MIMS if it weren’t going to sell here.

I don’t know how long it would take for them to engineer the next chassis to allow RHD but I would suspect it would be ready very soon if not already.

I’m not doubting the advice, it just doesn’t make sense. It wouldn’t be the first time car makers have done things ass about though would it.

  10. crouchy says:

seems odd to debut this in melbourne if it isnt coming????

I get a feeling it will be. It is a key role to play in changing hyundai’s image so would make no sense to keep this from RHD markets….

  11. T6 says:

“The V6 engine will launch the Genesis Coupe from 0-100km/h in just under six seconds”

LOL don’t make me laugh. If it gets anywhere near low 6’s I’d be impressed. Got to love manufacturer’s BS optomistic claims.

lazybones Hyundai is and always will be CHEAP!. Koreans don’t know how to build cars and never will. Nothing good has come out of Korea other than Taekwondo. For goodness sake they breed and eat dogs. I’m not being racist, it’s a fact they do.

If this car is priced anywhere near or over $40K it just won’t sell. Hyundai will always be a Hyundai. Even it’s brand name sounds cheap. How could you possibly change that.

  12. Howie-VL says:

    T6,

I believe the name has started to change. They’re starting to make a good name for themselves now. HOw could they offer a 5 year warranty if their cars weren’t reliable? They’d just be throwing money away. I have never been a fan of Hyundai, nor will things probably change. But they are definately starting to improve.

  13. John says:

I would buy one if they were available. Never been a fan of FWD. AWD would be ok if there was one that looked ok. Subaru must have borrowed the design team from the AU falcon, and the lancer has the cheapest interior and hard plastics that i have seen.
So if you dont want a family car, there isn’t much choice.

  14. Tim says:

    T6, you are an idiot.

    Goodbye

  15. Bavarian Missile (.)(.) says:

    Tim……… nicely said !

T6 quote ” The V6 engine will launch the Genesis Coupe from 0-100km/h in just under six seconds”

LOL don’t make me laugh. If it gets anywhere near low 6’s I’d be impressed. Got to love manufacturer’s BS optomistic claims.”

Dont make laugh mate, you obviously havent read anything about the car ! So here is some info for you !

” The V6 will put out 306 on regular and 310 on premium, which Hyundai says will make it the least expensive 300 horsepower coupe in the world.

Hyundai claims that the V6 model will hit 60 miles per hour in under six seconds. The top-line SE model will include Brembo four-piston brakes (14″ in front, 13.4″ in rear – both ventilated) and a Torsen limited-slip differential. It will also come with 19″ wheels, whereas other models will come with 18″ wheels. ”

So explain to me why it wont do under 6s ? Whats a good number for you ?

Take that Toyota…..rear wheel drive and grunt ,with the added bonus of affordability ! Hyundai has been kicking arse for years now .

What took the Japs 40 years has taken the Koreans 15…..

  16. Lightbulb says:

I am really looking forward to seeing the i30 CW wagon as its based on the award winning i30 hatch & should prove to be very popular. With the added space the wagon should give I think Hyundai are on a winner here, but I just hope there will be no supply problems with the car.

    Cheers !

  17. Myke says:

With the whole LHD/RHD thing, I read that Hyundai Australia were pushing the factory to built RHD versions of the Coupe. I doubt it would be shown at MIMS otherwise.

  18. Jake02 says:

What! Its going to be at MIMS and yet its not coming out here? That has got to be THE stupidest thing I’ve ever seen!

The nicest Hyundai ever and we don’t even get it! I live near thier headquarters and they have the i10, i10 Blue, i30 CW and i30 Blue and I really hope that these cars actually get released here because they all look fantastic! Its good the i30 CW is coming here as the Astra wagon may have a comp on its hands…

  19. "JAMES" says:

the front end reminds me of Alf’s nose for some reason,

i still ike the car though, should be a brand maker for hyundai

  20. "JAMES" says:

bavarian muscle, the japs took 40 years because they re-designed the modern car. thanks to them we have what we have today. it took the koreans only 15 because all they did was develop a brand from the current technology.

Hyundai has done well, but this shouldn’t take anything away from the japs.

  21. lazybones says:

T6, Last year I would have agreed with you. But times have certainly changed. I was forced to rent a Hyundai Sonata for a few weeks last year. An my word was this the worst handling car i’ve driven since my VR commodore!

But we have to remember in the current financial climate Hyundai are still selling and growing. Which gives them the ability to say to the others. “Say what you like, were doing something right!”

I think this coupe will be good, But i doubt it will be cheap. I’ve heard prices starting at $23K USD. But the US always get cheaper deals than us.

  22. Bavarian Missile (.)(.) says:

Quote James “bavarian muscle, the japs took 40 years because they re-designed the modern car. thanks to them we have what we have today. it took the koreans only 15 because all they did was develop a brand from the current technolog

Ya think ????????? In my opinion the Japs didnt redesign anything ,they still copy just as the Koreans do its just they are doing it faster and the Chinese will do it faster again!

  23. Cupid Stunt says:

Can’t say I was to impressed at the interior quality of Hyundai’s I have driven or sat in. Given that they are aiming below the big 3 then I guess that’s acceptable. Just don’t expect Audi quality if you’ve been there.

  24. Garry says:

T6 please I beg you do some reasearch on South Korea or do you want stay stupid for the rest of your life. They have a bigger economy then Aus.

  25. Mitchell Oke says:
