Maserati Levante, Alfa Romeo SUV to be built in Turin: report

Fiat has confirmed the upcoming Maserati Levante luxury SUV will be manufactured in Turin from 2014, and sister brand Alfa Romeo may join it soon after with an SUV of its own, according to industry journal Automotive News Europe.

Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed vehicles for both Maserati and Alfa Romeo would be produced at the company’s sorely underutilised Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy – the future of which has been under a cloud recently as the assembly line has been operating only a few days every month.

“I've made a commitment,” Marchionne said. “We are not closing Mirafiori. We will make luxury cars for both Maserati and for Alfa Romeo.”

The Jeep Grand Cherokee-based Maserati Levante will become the luxury Italian marque’s first SUV when it launches in 2014, and Alfa Romeo is expected to follow suit the following year.

Fiat is expected to confirm its production plans for Mirafiori by midyear.
