Alfa Romeo 4C: Italian sports car spied testing

Development of the Alfa Romeo 4C is progressing ahead of the new mid-engined sports car's anticipated unveiling at the Geneva motor show in March, with the car caught testing in Europe.

Despite the extensive use of camouflage, the Alfa Romeo 4C is easily recognisable, appearing to strongly mirror the concepts seen in Geneva and Frankfurt in 2011, with a compact wheelbase, sharp front end, aggressive side air intakes, round tail-lights, and classic Alfa Romeo telephone-dial wheels.

Alfa Romeo has previously said the rear-wheel-drive 4C will be powered by a 1.75-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing more than 147kW, but suggestions have been made that this could climb to upwards of 200kW in final production form.

With the car’s weight believed to be significantly less than 1000kg, the Alfa Romeo 4C should hit 100km/h from standstill in less than five seconds and be good for a top speed of around 250km/h. While the Alfa Romeo 4C coupe has so far only been confirmed for left-hand-drive markets, Alfa Romeo’s new Mazda MX-5-based Spyder model will be produced for RHD markets such as Australia and the UK.

The Geneva motor show kicks off on March 7.
