2009 Kia Cerato Review

By Alborz Fallah |

Kia has a bit of a penchant for spelling words with a ‘K’ , for possibly obvious reasons, so I’m going to make a suggestion to it here, consider adding ‘Konservative’ to the lexicon – at least where it relates to the estimate that it will sell just 3000 of the all-new Cerato small sedan in Australia this year.

cerato-speed-dust

While on the one hand the company has been talking up the new Cerato as a contender against the major players in the small car segment here, that’s Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Mitsubishi Lancer and Mazda3, the Korean car-maker has also played down the numbers its reckons it can sell.

Let me tell you, the new Cerato isn’t the greatest car in the world, but after a day of driving it on a varied selection of roads around Melbourne, including quite a few kilometres of gravel, it will seriously frighten the opposition and should be right at the top of every buyer’s shopping list.

ceratos-turning

Forget the old Cerato that was an under-done attempt, firmly stuck in the ‘cheap-and-cheerful’ basket, and a major reason Kia Motors Australia executives are being so conservative about the numbers they believe they can sell of the new car.

To be frank they just don’t seem to believe they can get enough buyers into showrooms to sell this car in its true numbers.

cerato-blurr

What Australian’s need to realise is that companies such as Kia are marching forward and the vehicles they are now building are up there with the best in class from Japan and Europe.

The Cerato is a case in point; it’s been designed under the supervision of Kia design guru Peter Schreyer, the man who brought us various Volkswagen Golfs and a whole range of Audis, right up to the A5.

His stamp is becoming increasingly evident at Kia and with the imminent roll out of cars like the Soul it will become even more evident.

Kia will bring a range of new and revamped models to the Australian market this year, cars it says will be well-endowed with features, stunning looks and impressive value for money, as Kia claims, in essence, cars that deliver on their promise.

As Kia tells it the first to arrive is the handsome new Kia Cerato, a compact sporty sedan that it says will meet the needs of many Australian car buyers.

The new Cerato is the first Kia released in Australia to feature the new ‘Schreyer line’, a family corporate grille design from the pen of Kia’s global chief designer, Peter Schreyer, who joined the company in 2006 from the Volkswagen Group.

2009-kia-cerato-the-schreyer-line-grille-041

According to Mr Schreyer, it’s no surprise that design is the number one purchase influence but, he says, it is essential that new designs match both the Kia brand value and the vision of the Kia brand.

As head of design, Mr Schreyer has worked to develop a new, more contemporary look for all Kia vehicles.

The new Cerato is the first mass production Kia that embodies his thinking, and introduces a look that is sporty with an element of aggression.

We’ve already told you something about the specifications and pricing of the new Cerato but now we have driven it and while it wasn’t the full week long test to which we will shortly subject both models, the S and the SLi, it was a chance to get an idea of just how this car had moved on from the previous Cerato.

cerato-group

The expression “light years” springs to mind, but that’s not to say that this car doesn’t have its detractions, it’s just that its attractions are much stronger.

A strong, punchy, 2.0-litre engine is one, along with a smooth shifting five-speed manual and a four-speed auto that manages to keep up pretty well given the lack of ratios, a handling and suspension package that sits flat and feels positive and steering that lets you point the car just where you want it to go are all on the list.

cerato-bridge

Kia Product Manger, Nick Reid, was quick to point out to CarAdvice that the new Cerato has the most powerful naturally aspirated engine in its class, Kia’s new Theta II engine, the first application of this engine in the small car segment in Australia.

The new twin-cam, four-cylinder 2.0-litre, Theta II petrol engine, with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT), revs smoothly to produce 115kW of power at 6200rpm and 194Nm of torque at 4300rpm to take the mantle of class-leader in the power stakes.

2009-kia-cerato-engine-02

The Euro IV-compliant Theta II engine is mated to a smooth-shifting, short-throw five-speed manual as standard, providing excellent driver control.

As an option, for an extra $2000, there’s Kia’s gated, four-speed automatic gearbox, which has a smooth shift action but does struggle at times to keep up with the action, despite the excellent torque of the Theta engine. The auto gearbox also offers the choice of Sportsmatic manual-shift capability.

2009-kia-cerato-sli-interior-011

The Cerato’s 2.0-litre engine is a lightweight 16-valve unit that seems quite powerful, quiet and economical.

We didn’t see fuel consumption figures that matched the combined ADR efficiency of 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres for the manual or 7.9L/100km for the auto, but we did come close with both manual and auto showing figures of around 8.4L/100km during several hundred kilometres of vigorous driving.

Kia says that mated to the four-speed automatic gearbox, the 2.0-litre Theta II engine can power the Cerato from 0-100 km/h in 10.5 seconds and on to 190km/h, while 0-100 km/h in 9.3 seconds and a 200km/h top speed can be achieved with manual gearbox.

red-cerato-rear

The four-speed Sportsmatic automatic uses a new lightweight flat-type torque converter that is smaller than a conventional unit, with less friction and, according to Kia, is therefore better fuel efficiency.

For a four-speed unit its not too bad on the road, helped by ratios that seem to be well matched to the power and torque of the engine, and only struggled mildly with substantial hills, before having to grab a lower gear.

Next page…

We did hear from Mr Reid that an all-new six-speed automatic is about to be deployed across some Kia models overseas and he expects that this unit will ultimately be rolled out across the range, so we would guess an update model down the track will feature this new gearbox.

Keen to build on pluses with the Cerato Kia says its rating in the Australian Government’s Green Vehicle Guide of 4.5 stars makes it one of the class-leaders in the small car segment.

2009-kia-cerato-sli-15

The Cerato emits just 186 grams per kilometre of CO2 with the manual gearbox and 187g/km for the four-speed automatic, despite being the most powerful vehicle in its class.

The new Cerato is larger than its predecessor in both length and width and can rival all its segment competitors in overall size. According to Kia the Cerato’s 4530mm length, allied with its 2650mm wheelbase and 1775mm width, gives the new car an athletic stance that is matched by its sporty road feel.

cerato-group-parked

The chassis has been tuned to deliver the European feel favoured by many Australians, with the aim being excellent steering response, roadholding, ride comfort and braking.

After a day behind the wheel there’s every reason to agree that the combined result is precise steering and sure-footed roadholding, matched with a composed and supple ride, which offers driving enjoyment without compromising passenger comfort.

2009-kia-cerato-sli-20

There’s nothing of the old Cerato left in the underpinnings of the new Cerato. Designed around an all-new platform, the new Cerato uses high-tensile steel to improve rigidity and benefit of dynamic behaviour and crash safety. The platform’s rigidity is enhanced by a hoop structure around the central pillar area designed to offer better occupant protection, especially in rollover accidents.

At the front, the new Cerato uses a McPherson strut layout with coil springs and gas shock absorbers, employing sub-frames constructed using hydro-forming techniques to reduce weight. The solid-mounted sub-frames and increased castor angle enhance handling performance, while L-shaped lower arms enhance collision performance and high-speed driving stability.

At the rear, a coupled torsion beam axle is used in conjunction with gas shock absorbers, mirroring a number of European and Japanese competitors. The lightweight rear suspension system enables the new Cerato to have a larger boot than its competitors and delivers improvements in rear crash performance.

2009-kia-cerato-s-011

The Cerato S rides on 15-inch steel rims with wheel covers and 195/65R15 tyres, while the Cerato SLi rides on 10-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels shod with 215/45R17 tyres. Both models are equipped with a full-size spare wheel, including an alloy for the SLi.

Cerato also has good stopping power with larger diameter front and rear disc brakes than its predecessor, 280mm front and 262mm rear.

The hydraulic rack and pinion steering system, with both reach and rake adjustment on the steering wheel, has 2.89 turns lock to lock in the Cerato S (15-inch rims) for a 10.32 metre diameter turning circle. Using 17-inch rims, the Cerato SLi has 2.77 turns lock to lock and a 10.78m turning circle.

2009-kia-cerato-sli-041

Our drive of the Cerato started in the inner city and took in a wide range of freeway, country roads and the aforementioned gravel roads, which left us very impressed with the both the manoeuvrability, as well as the quick and precise response and good feedback on country roads without feeling overly-sensitive for freeway driving.

Next page…

The ride and handling is impressive for both a Kia and for a car in this segment, the car rides flat, doesn’t get out of shape easily, although it will ultimately understeer when you push it just too far, and rides with a level of comfort and quietness that wasn’t really expected.

2009-kia-cerato-s-interior-01

When we deliberately dropped a couple of wheels off the broken edge of a country road the Cerato soaked up the bumps and stayed right on track.

At the same time on gravel it was reassuring to turn into corners knowing that the car was going to head precisely where it was pointed.

If there’s one downside to the new Cerato it’s Kia’s decision to make Electronic Stability Program (ESP), something we consider should be mandatory, and Traction Control an option, it’s part of a $1000 Option Pack, on the base model.
That said we drove a non-ESP Cerato S over some challenging gravel roads and it was more than reassuring, we just think that every driver should have the added assurance of ESP.

Kia National Marketing Manager, Steve Watt, argues the decision purely on the basis that the segment is price sensitive and that the Option Pack is already seeing widespread dealer take-up.

2009-kia-cerato-range

The Cerato range is equipped as standard with dual SRS front airbags; side front SRS airbags and full-length curtain SRS airbags; active headrests and seatbelt pre-tensioners for front seats; and 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) and Brake Assist.

The range-topping Cerato SLi comes standard with ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and TCS (Traction Control System), which is also available as an option for the Cerato S.

From the outside the Cerato is definitely a much bolder, more aggressive look for Kia with a wedge-like side profile.
The ‘Schreyer line’ corporate face with its sweep of headlamps and distinctive radiator grille is accentuated by a strong front bumper and bonnet line that gives the car a very athletic stance.

2009-kia-cerato-sli-10

The rear end is just as dynamic with a lip spoiler effect that creates a very aerodynamic feel and the low drag co-efficient of 0.29 and low lift coefficient of 0.16 is in part due to measures that channel air cleanly around the Cerato’s body.

All Cerato models feature body coloured bumpers and door mirrors. Cerato S has body coloured door handles, while the SLi has chrome door handles, chrome radiator grille and rear garnish.

Both models also feature electric heated outside door mirrors, convex door mirrors and side repeater lamps on door mirrors, while the SLI is also fitted with front fog lights.

2009-kia-cerato-sli-171

Inside the cabin, the driver sits in front of a new two-tier dashboard with distinctive details such as a three-cylinder ‘Super Vision’ cluster in Cerato SLi which includes the in-dash display four ultrasonic rear parking sensors and a six-function trip computer.

2009-kia-cerato-sli-interior-02

Both Cerato S and SLi have a distinctive three-spoke steering wheel, with the latter model fitted with cruise control and remote audio controls (both optional on Cerato S).

2009-kia-cerato-sli-interior-07

Cerato SLi also features alloy pedals, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob for an even sportier touch.
The centre fascia contains audio, heating and ventilation controls in a simple, easy-to-read layout. There’s also auxiliary and USB plugs available, which accommodate full iPod compatibility.

2009-kia-cerato-sli-interior-04

Both models are fitted with speed sensing door locks that automatically lock once the vehicle has reached a speed of 40km/h.

They also feature a driver’s seat height adjuster, 60:40 fold flat rear seat, tilt and telescope adjustable steering column and rear centre armrest.

As we said at the beginning this car isn’t the greatest car every built, but it signals yet another major player in the Australian car market moving up the ladder to offer vastly improved products that challenge the established leaders.

All-round the new Cerato deserves to be on small car buyers shopping lists and at the price it is extremely competitive.

Pricing:
Cerato S Manual $18,990
Cerato S Automatic $20,990
Option Pack $1000
Cerato SLi Manual $ 22,990
Cerato SLi Automatic $ 24,990
Premium paint (Mica/Metallic) is available at $300 extra cost.

Top read – but seemed tooooo impressionable as if written by a Kia salesman and you never really elaborated in great detail why this car is not best ever made. All what was mentioned was understeer, auto, fuel consumption and lack of ESP?????

  • Tom

There is alot of Kia love from caradvice…

It looks like just a mess of Honda parts bin. I see the 05 Euro in the front end, alot of civic in its profile, and more euro in those tail lights.

It looks like a mess of honda.

  • topdog

Hay there stolen the head lights of honda

  • Andrew M

    Tom,
    I agree,
it looks like a honda wannabe

  • http://. Naughtyius Maximus

Gee whiz some people go on with trivial nothingness….. hey they have stolen all other cars as they have round wheels! It looks fine and aside from petty chit chat its a shame others cant be up to speed on design and looks!

  • http://. Naughtyius Maximus

I may add I better watch out my home designs I do as they have roofs, walls, windows, raised porticos and could be “easily” construed as copying! LMAO massive – get over yourselves!

  • http://caradvice.com.au anthony

Some of you guys really need to wake up!

This is a “First Steer” and an informative one at that, after only five hours behind the wheel.

Car Advice will comprehensively review the new Cerato as soon as a car is available.

  • tack

Just curious… The car advice receives money to write review from car company?
Because this article is boring and almost crappy crap.
And most other reader/viewer agree with me…I think.
This article really bad as TopGear AUS, we all want to see a review from Clarkson, Topgear UK.
CAR Advice keep working hard as usual, Normally you are pretty good!!!

  • GTR

Does anyone here agree with me, the back looks like an Audi A4?

Overall this car looks preety darn good!

  • crouchy

Come on guys! Give CarAdvice a break!!!

Heaven forbid someone try and support a lesser liked car maker in this country…

This car could be better than an aston martin and you all would still be saying the same things… blah blah blah… paid by kia etc..

The fact that CarAdvice speaks its mind and offers straight forward opinions on new cars is something that we have come to love and respect. They do it on a kia and theres uproar?

Kia is making great ground here. Not to mention the money they throw this country through big sponserships.

Its about time you all gave then and caradvice a break.

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au/19950/james-morrison-to-lead-top-gear-australia/ Bucce

ther all over the australian open

  • ComradeVodka

Agree 100% with Crouchy. See, all those people seem to think that this would be such a terrible car, and it isn’t, so they have to pull the same rubbish, and try to claim its copied Honda. Why don’t you take that up the Peter Schreyer then, alright? And stop putting Kia down.

Great, unbiased read as always CarAdvice, well done! Look forward to the review.

  • Alan

Looks good, great value and the first Kia sold in australia i would seriously consider buying.

Few things though, torsion beam rear axle is rather outdated and only Corolla still uses it amongst this car’s main competitors. They should have used the same setup as on Cee’d with multi link suspension at the back.

As for the drive train, sounds like a solid engine and gear box combo, would be good to have that 6 speed auto soon. Also, how about a diesel version with the same diesel engine as seen on i30?

Finally, i love the new styling outside, but work still needs to be done on the interior. Other than the Hyundai Genesis, i’ve yet to see a Korean car with a good looking interior

  • ZoomZoom

oh man, (0-100 in 9.3 secs) I was expecting so much more from 115kw.

Oh well, at least it’s faster than a corolla though :)
    Now everybody is happy!

  • Simonsez

Tack: It’s really ironic that you should criticise this article as “crappy crap” when your own grasp of English is so tenuous. In fairness though , my Japanese isn’t so good either.
Why on earth would you want to read the mindless gibberish dished up by that overgrown schoolboy Clarkson? If he’d written the piece , you’d have five pages of totally unrelated nonsense and five lines actually relating to the vehicle in question . For those who find him entertaining I’d suggest that in person he’d soon wear very thin.
Caradvice offers up to date info and aren’t afraid to step on the toes of some of the auto giants if they believe that criticism is warranted.
Let other car makers ignore Kia at their peril.

  • zahmad

    Seems like great value….!

  • Phil

If they’re copying Honda’s styling then they have ended up with a better interpretation. Looks much nicer than the current civic.

  • binladen

Looks like the thing after the ex-euro had a affair with the American Civic :-)

  • Yoho

Reminds me of this car when I was in Japan:

    http://toyota.jp/allion/

  • chris

Looks good! In the market for a small car for the Mrs at the moment, was looking at the Mazda 3 and Lancer, but Ill be stopping by Kia tomorrow to check this thing out!

  • Snowman

Looks like Kia have got their act together – good luck to ‘em!

By the way – is anyone else being sent back to page one when clicking on “Next Page” on pages 2 & 3?

  • Captain Mainwaring

This is a seriously good looking car and they will sell heaps at the price. The Salesman will be getting a bulge in his pants.

  • http://www.littlepixiegifts.com.au Gift-Ed

    It sounds very impressive.

Amazing what the influence of an ex VW guy can produce. Amazing value too.

My only negative observation – it somehow reminds me of Dodge Neo from the side…

  • riceboy

Whoa! A damn good looking front driver, with decent value, that “will ultimately oversteer when you push it just too far”!!! I want one!

  • Tack

    HI Simonsez,
I am so sorry if I harmed your feeling.
Well as you said, “Crappy Crap” was too much I should write just “Crap”.
I know Jeremy Clarkson only from TV and Magazine, and he was sometime not fair, but at least he said (or wrote) honest his opinions.
Does he speak gibberish? Well even so, he seemed enjoy it, and most us enjoy his show too.

The title of this article is “2009 KIA CERATO – FIRST STEER”.
If this is just like First Information or something similar I don’t care about it.
But it is “First Steer”, so that mean kind impression isn’t it?
(As my poor English, maybe I was wrong….If so, SORRY)
And as an article of first impression of new car, this article is quite mindless for me.

This is free country, we can say what we feel or think.
Especially this car is not yet release or just released (I don’t know).
So all we just say our impression from pictures.
When I watched this car’s TV commercial, I thought it looks Honda.
And I found it is not only me in this article.
I like Car Advice. and keep visiting this site and post my opinion if I want.
(Well, I didn’t post comment at Falcon/Commodore articles. I have been in AUS since 1995, So I think I am not mature enough to comment about these Aussie icon.)
And if they don’t like me, they will delete my name or comment. That’s fine for me.

  • milobob

need to fix the “next page” link on the 2nd and 3rd page :)

  • Jason

“it will ultimately oversteer when you push it just too far”

Surely Caradvice meant to say understeer on page 4 or did I miss something?

  • BONES

Seems very impressive, much as the new i30 is when compared to the Elantra that came before it. The torsion-beam rear-end is there because it is more compact and allows for a bigger boot. Both Corolla and Astra still use this set-up, yet Motor magazine believe the Astra SRi is a better handler than the independent rear-suspended Golf GT. It’s all in the set-up and whilst you’d probably want a more sophisticated set-up if you had 150kW on tap, the chassis is probably well suited to the drivetrain.
Hopefully the Koup will take it up a notch or two but I don;t see any reason to poo-poo the suspension until you know how well it is set-up.
As for comparing the styling to a Euro, I can think of no greater compliment, as it is one of the best looking sedans on the road. To me it looks like a 4-door Integra, so it’s no surprise then that the Koup is also reminiscent of that car. Surely that can’t be a bad thing, especially when there are as many differences as similarities? I particularly like the scallop that runs from the door-mirrors back to the boot-line. It’s a little bit SX4 but done much, much better. So far the signs are all very positive that Kia is onto a real winner.

  • crouchy

Yoho, definately some likeness between this and the toyota allion.

  • Alan

BONES, Golf and especially Ford Focus are considered the best handling in this class and they both employ independent suspension at the back. Torsion beam not only effect handling, it also effect ride quality as they don’t isolate bumps as well. Yes, torsion beam is more compact and allow a bigger boot space, but it also signals cost cutting. They should’ve used the multi link setup from i30 and Cee’d

  • Iz

Definitely a handsome and fine looker. KIA’s budget for marketing is well deserved if this car is to make headway in the market. The ads that are on during the Aus Open are amusing, to say the least.

Would be definitely visiting my local KIA dealer when the Soul swings by though ^_^

And re the question about the independent rear; this car is predominantly aimed at markets that appreciate sedan bodies with big boots (Asian markets spring to mind immediately). Torsion beams can still be tuned to provide safe, controlled handling, and in this class, its what you want.

Many go-faster models of cars still come equipped with torsion beam rear suspensions (many French cars are so equipped, like the 207 GTi and Megane) and still handle fine.

And to be fair, most buyers will definitely appreciate that the car has a limit level (in terms of handling) that is reasonably high, but will never go out day in day out to try and find/beat them; more so in this class of car.

  • eh179driver

Another informative first drive from Caradvice. These guys have it all over some of the “Auto” magazines here in Oz. They take a car and drive it on real roads and give a good informative review. If it was wheels all you would read about was how it laos Calder, standing 1/4 mile times and would only see pictures of it going sideways!
As CA says, a full in depth review will follow.
The Cerato looks like a nice well designed car. Who cares if there are design elements of other brands in there. If I was in the market for a car of this size and price it would be on my list. Looks miles better than a Corolla (IMO).

  • Mike

2 Posts about Kia Cerato in the last week? It does look good, but its a Kia. Australian Open anyone? Coincidence?

  • Realcars

Some say in relative terms of course the EH 179 was the best Holden ever made.Remember flying up Mt Ousley in my Dads.

Good car to be seen in on Australia Day!

This Korean duo is amazing,Just keep getting better at a value price.

Is a good looking car.Honda copied alfas 156 for the euro with generic Honda front of course. Japs copy everyone else and when they don’t they make some fugly mistakes.

No secret Euros set the trends in design cues. Thats why a ten year old Bora or 156 looks as modern as a recent Japper.

  • Mike

LMAO BORA ..that ugly bland thing… no thanx.. Honda Wheel COTY and Drive COTY!

  • Adam

    Australian Open coincidence??

    Hardly.

I think it’s quite smart of Kia to integrate their marketing comms in this manner. They are generating massive exposure right now, and seemingly have the product in place to back it up.

  • Richo

i was given the impression from all the VE commodore articles that any car with only a 4 speed automatic is instantly a giant hunk of shit… therefore this must be

  • Mike

It is definitely a smart move and I have to admit, this is the first Kia I am excited about. Just a coincidence that’s all. This site doesn’t pay for itself ey. 2 Kia Cerato columns in a week. When else do you hear about Kia outside of the 2 weeks that Federer is on our shores.

  • Wheelnut

Quote [It's great to be number one}: Kia Who

By mnaking such a comment proves your ignorance and Arrogance when it comes to cars.

Even though Kia mightn't be as popular as your beloved Toyota they are still a car manufacturer and inorder to simply dismiss them and their cars because of their perceived reputation or whatever; can have serious consequences.. as one day it may get to the point where Kia have suddenly developed into a major player and quite possibly become a threat to Toyota ... unlikely but nonetheless still possible.

The same could have been said about Lexus years ago

Mind you its similar to the arrogance shown by Toyota in relation to the Corolla. For years the Corlla has been the [perceived] benchmark in the Hatchback sector.. because of this Toyota rested on their Laurels and didn’t make any real significant improvements to the car sa they thought that “its still number one”.

However; overtime cars which Toyota beleived weren’t a reat threat to the Rolla have made signigfiant improvements in particularly terms of styling performance and features etc and are much better value for money..
Toyota have reacted and only just recently offered DSC on the Corolla as standard a feature which its competitors have ahd for ages

See what happens when you become arrogant; complacent and develop a holier than thou attitude

When youre in any competition you must be aware of every rival no matter how big they hare or what their performance is like as there is always the chance of an upset

  • Realcars

4 speed autos are the norm in this class/pricing whereas Commodore is about the only one in it’s class to start with a 4 speed auto.

Agree Wheelnut Hyundai/Kia will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

Toyota has huge brand loyalty. The cars do their job ok but also the Toyota marketing machine has created a reputation of mythic proportions.

If buyers continue to have a good experience with Hyundai/Kia then I am sure the word will spread and some will make the transition. Toyota done much the same in the late sixties/ early seventies offering dynamically challenged vehicles for at least the first 15 years that went the distance, offered lots of fruit but by comparison were awful to drive.

  • Realcars

Hasn’t the Cerato got a five year unlimited klm warranty whereas the Corolla a three tear/100,000klm warranty?

So let me get this straight.

The Cerato is significantly cheaper and better equipped than a Corolla.

The Cerato looks 100 times correction a 1000 times better than a Corolla(which wouldn’t be hard).

The Cerato goes as good if not better than a Corolla(especially handling).

…and if u buy a Cerato and do 50,000klms a year in five years time and 250,000klms later KIA will still fix it under warranty whereas you’ll be whistling dixie to get the dealer to pay for a repair on the Corolla.

  • http://. Naughtyius Maximus

LMAO…..not 1000 times REALCARS but a 1,000,000. Toyota buyers – do yourself a favour and get a Cerato as it rocks and seems fine as and will take fight right up to other contenders in its class no problems!

  • Lukaas

    Looks 1000,000 times better?

Looks are the most debatable thing out of commercial products… beauty is on the eye of the beholder.

I think it looks goof, but the Corolla hatch looks better.

    See…

  • Realcars

Take those Toyota tainted glasses off!

  • RoFlmaTiC

Warranties don’t cover everything though… a lot of the ongoing costs of the car are for “wear and tear” items which I suspect would certainly not be included in the warranty.

So if we talk hypothetically (as I don’t know whether this is the case with this car), it would be possible for a budget car manufacturer to skimp on stuff like brake pads, the brakes (only manufacturing defects would be fixed) paint etc as they know they won’t have to cover these parts under warranty.

Also the warranty would only be valid if you get your car serviced at kia dealers. And I just looked at prices for the cerato, and they aren’t cheap! Even though the intervals are every 15000 kms, they price varies between 300 dollars a pop to a whopping 1050 (90000km service).

Competitors like the corolla charge 200 – 500 (80000km service) and that isn’t including the fixed service price promotion.

THe fiesta is even better, with 240 – 400 at 15000km intervals with a major service costing about 780 at 150000kms

  • RoFlmaTiC

I got those figures from www . carservice . com .au

I would suggest that any savings you might make with the purchase price of a kia would be negated by the higher servicing costs.

  • sexythang

very vague review. all we need to know is whether it steers like a focus and is built like a mazda 3 with a aud3000 discount. case closed.

  • zahmad

That is misleading because those are the prices of previous gen cerato…..

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au David Twomey

ZAHMAD, THE PRICES QUOTED ARE FOR THE NEW CERATO!

  • eh179driver

My experiance with Toyota is limited to a new Rav4 and Aurion. Both were two of the worst cars I have ever owned. The Rav (new gen) came complete with 2 major water leaks that took months to fix and involved changing the carpet twice, but only after many threats. Water stains on a 3 month old carpet? I don’t think so. Then came the electrical problems, no doubt caused by the water leaks, oil leaks, brake problems. In the end I traded it and after some negotiations I was offered a good deal on an Aurion to offset the loss I would have made. I must admit that Toyota/the dealer were good about it. Boy did I live to regret that as the Aurion was so bad. Electrical issues, auto trans problems that even came back after it was changed, dash rattles and squeaks that involved removing the dash (and breaking the windscreen at the same time) airbag warning lights coming on and off, two replacement stereo’s and water leaks and plenty of other things that I can’t recall. The Cerato could never be as bad as the Toyotas. Plus KIA could not be as hard to come to the party for fixes. Plus they probably don’t charge you $35 a day for a loan Corolla while they try (in vain) to fix your 2 week old car! Toyota anyone? No I did not think so!!!!!!

  • http://caradvice.com.au OSU811

Has typical korean advantages of high specs and low comparable prices.. The diffrence is the cerato actually has some substance aswell, in the way of looks, interior quality and handling, engine gearbox sound ok too.. Should be a success for kia. I would buy one over a boring COROLLA any day..

  • c1ockwork

As others have said, Honda called; they want their styling back.

It seems to me that in an effort to get away from their horrible designs of the past, the Koreans are happy to plagiarize particular aspects of their cars – the back of the i30, the front (if not all) of this, etc. Yes, I’m aware this has been happening since the dawn of time, but at least in the past the stolen styling cues were loosely ‘reinterpreted’, not just blatantly copied. Unsurprisingly, it’s a great looking car.

Korean styling is improving, build quality is on the up, they’re definitely serious contenders these days. Please start plagiarizing some interiors though (preferably from the Europeans).

  • Joober

Clockwork, at least they are not the chinese, where many of the cars are direct copies.

Although there is to a certain point (feasable) one can plagarise though, its when doing something is going to cost quite a bit, and this is where interiors can add up to the cost of the car to build, so i doubt kia would adopt a full euro fixture and fittings like what you get in high end beemers or mercs..

eh179driver: sounds like you got a dud of an aurion, I remeber someone in the Toyota forums had soooo many problem with his aurions, he also had problems with the dealer as well, took him forever to get a new car, because it was such a lemon.
One thing I can confirm is a typical problem in all Aurion builds (perhaps they fixed it now) is those squeeks and rattles, I got mine fixed, it was the center ventilation fins.

I agree with the comments above where the Sth Korean manufacturers are picking up their game. Toyota has been sitting on its laurels for the pst decade not really innovative and wow at all. But I guess they do it on PURPOSE as why wouldnt they? if profit and growth are purely in its target sights and that they can build something so efficient and cost cutting and manage to make a sale out of it, why wouldnt you.

If you want to blame someone blame the people who accept cars as an A2Ber and purchase without much research/sucked in by the dealer and commercials. But then again you can blame people who by stuff from harvey norman at full price, people who by ready-to-use pc’s from HP, dell etc instead of building themselves or building using quality parts. People who by elite brand name clothing, even though the material used is rubbish…. hence the saying “Dont hate the player hate the game”, Toyota is a player who knows the game pretty well, and exploit the position they are in, but then every other profit aiming company would…

  • Robj

What a dull car. Make for dull people whom dont car about driving. Kia/Hyandai its all the same….

  • Joober

Robj, how is it a dull car? What do you believe is not a dull in this car segment?

  • Technofreak

Impressive value car this! Looks great and appears well built for the price…I expect these will sell real well.

  • Realcars

Servicing. U have really opened a can of worms.

Fixed price servicing is both a fallacy and a ripoff.

There is little to service on a modern car. Change the oil and filter which takes less than 15mins for a skilled operator, change the air filter another five minutes and have a look to make sure none of the wheels are falling off.

Change the fuel filter another 15minutes every second or third service. Also change the pollen filter another five minutes. If brakes need doing this is over and above the fixed price service.

Whopper at 90,000klms might be a timing belt service?

I usually get about 80,000 to 100,000klms out of my brake pads but then Iam a good driver.

  • Realcars

Perhaps Caradvice could include fix price servicing figures with each review.

Would keep em honest if nothing else.

  • http://. Naughtyius Maximus

Repeat…..no one company or person owns copyright to any styling cues. Get over this shallow nothing attitude and call a spade a spade and realise that Kia and Hyundai are listening to what public want in terms of fresh vibrant style and true “bang for your buck”

  • Andrew M

    NM,
    are you sure on that???

how did the court case end up when Mercedes and many other manufacturers took actions against chinese makers such as Chery.
Also, try and tell the ports that the immitating goods they seize trying to make their way onto our shores is fine and dandy

Hyundai have always given bang for your buck, its nothing new to say about them, but in saying that, you still only get the amount of bang in relation to the buck you are shelling out.

  • Realcars

I Honda Euro knockoff that looks better than the original.LOL.

  • Bavarian Missile (.)(.)

AndrewM re the copying debate……….BMW won in court against the knock off the X5 {except in Italy from memory}……..its all about passing off laws.Even in this Country,if you register your design before it is displayed in public and someone knocks it off after its registered its persevered as “passing off”

How do I know this cause our products design are registered in Europe,UK,USA and Australia ,someone in Australia thought they would make a copy of it even down to naming it the same {which its Trade Marked},lawyers shut them down on the “passing off law”. In the UK the products also landed at a trade fair {as samles} and where removed from the stand……..UK crushes copies, should do same here!

  • zahmad

David Twomey, you are mistaken…price of servicing is quoted from 07-…i.e the 07 model etc….this is the 2009!

  • Robj

Don’t pretend KIA is anything but a budget brand aimed at the mass market whom care nothing about driving (pensioners & other low socio-economic groups). They are easy distracted by shiny trinkets and have very low demands as customers anyway. You can tell this the moment you step into a KIA showroom.

  • Andrew M

    So BMW won,
    how did the rest go???

it could also be termed defamation in producing something that resembles a decent product, actually being a crap one.

BMW and merc etc could argue that it lowers their brand by producing clones that arent near as good.
Thats the whole problem they had with it from the start

  • Wheelnut

Robj: your previous comment is quite interesting – you say that basic budget cars only appeal to pensioners and uneducated peoople from low socio economic backgrounds.. as they are simple easily distracted by shiny things and aren’t really demanding customers anyway

Yet if any demographic is more demanding its pensioners and those from low socio economic backgrounds.
They do a fair amount of research [more than most] into almost everything they buy be it a car television computer etc.
They are always on the lookout for something that is of reasonable quality reliable built to last and is what they beleive is the best value for money.
Unlike most people they tend to buy something that is practical veratile and most suitable to their needs… because they don’t have the money to replace a car every year…. they’re not out to impress anyone

All of which explains why the Yaris and Corolla are so popular doesn’t it?

  • Robj

Lets see which customers purchase those dangerous Chinese cars (GWM, Chery etc)when they get here also.

  • Andrew M

    Robj,
if the amount of Crazy Clarks style stores that has popped up over the last few years is any indicator of what the public wants,
Then yes, i will say the “el-cheap-o” cars will rocket out the doors

  • Harry Dixon Balls

Great looking car. Better looking than Corolla, Lancer, Impreza, i30, and new mazda 3.

  • zahmad

Agree with Harry dixon Balls….thats what the impreza should have looked like….they need the designer who pennned this face: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/impreza/STI04whitefront1a.JPG

  • FrugalOne

    Lots of interest in it!

  • FrugalOne

    I like it!

With Corolla now offereing safety-pack on the Ascent [bout time too!!]but at a still very high price [should be std.] and the fact still-no-electric-windows in the rear, its frankly a rip-off, i will pass on it.

The std. default Corolla @ ~$20k needs to the the Conquest.

Things i DONT like about the new Cerato

    1/No 5 speed auto.
2/No trip computer on base model.
3/No outside temp. gauge on base model.
    4/Goose neck hinges on boot.
    5/About $1000 to much.
    6/Safety pack should be inc.
7/Should have called it a new name “Forte” like in other

No mention of service interval and cost, Toyota is fixed @ $120 for first 5 services.

Other than that will check it out in real and report back, other cars on my list are the new Mazda3, haonda City and 2nd hand Prius.

    Cheers

    F-0

  • Zorro

Why all the fuss over the cars “borrowed” styling? The Japanese have been doing this for decades…

Seems like great value for money, and thankfully, as someone else noted, there’s substance underneath the style. Toyota should very definately be worried.

Now, can anyone tell me, does Hyundai own Kia?

  • HAL

Zorro, as far as I’m aware Hyundai does own Kia, and they share a lot of vehicle components with each other eg. the engine from the Santa Fe is the one you will find in the Sorrento.

As for the Cerato, it looks good. What does it matter that elements of one car look similar to another – I couldn’t give a rat’s tossbag. If a car looks good, then it looks good, as this one does. Doesn’t mean that it’s suitable for me, but it’s a good attractive, reliable option for those who can’t afford a more expensive car. It also seems that Kia are getting better quality-wise too, which can only be a good thing.

Why do some bloggers here get so worked up over how many reviews Car Advice do on one particular make or another? It’s ridiculous – to me they seem to be reviewing each manufacturer’s offerings when they get access to them. It’s no coincidence that Kia are releasing the Cerato in Aus at the same time that the Aus Open is on, so big deal? That’s just capitalising on your marketing opportunities – smart thinking really. And CA are reviewing the car as it has become available. There is no conspiracy here people, so just chill.

  • Steve-Poyza

No offence, but many of you are either blind or simply idiots! Just because Kia is Korean they can’t build good cars or have their own individual style. This does not look like the Accord Euro, if you were purposely trying to match it to another car that would be the closest resemblance but otherwise it looks nothing like it!

Kia and Peter Schreyer have clearly made a beautiful effort with this car. It looks sounds, it got a good review, it doesn’t automatically mean that CA are advertising it!!!

    I agree with HAL

  • eh179driver

Good points Hal and Steve Poyza. Why spend more on a car than you really have to? Besides, Hyundai does indeed own Kia and Hyundai have been at or near the top of the quality, reliability and customer satisfaction ratings in Europe and the USA for a few years now. Hyundai won the car of the year in Australia in 2007 with the I30 so it proves that they are doing something right. Although Car of the Year in Australia does not mean a whole lot these days….

  • jackson

this is one of the best looking mid size cars there are, i personally like it better than the toyota corolla let alone the honda civic

    KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIA

  • T

    Im impressed!

for starters, it doesnt look like a kia! AND the specs of the engine, combined with its claimed fuel economy figures ( http://www.kia.com.au ) are extremely impressive!!

Shame about the hideous hyundai elantra dash and that god awful steering wheel.

    but great effort kia!!

( are kia still owned by Hyundai?? )

  • http://skyline The Salesman

    T.
Hyundai is the parent company. Great review. I am sure we will see a long term review soon. For a long time people have been talking about Kia being a threat to Japanese manufactures. I have the all of the competitors within spitting distance to my dealership and customers often compare Kia to them. I think we can say, Kia is on a par with the Japanese on quality, and we blow them out of the water on price and warranty.

  • Robin Graves

I agree with Alan, and a few others – they should have used the i30 and c’eeds diesel engine as an option, and the multi link rear end. The Hyundai 6-speed auto should filter thru new models soon hopefully, thats the biggest downfall on most of their models. Toyota are in for a shock in the near future, although judging by some of the posts on here, dimwit badge snobs will keep them propped up for a while yet. If they want to waste money on a badge good luck to them.

  • Todd

It looks like a better looking Civic with a much nicer dashboard. It seems that Kia is doing to the Japanese what the Japanese did to American car companies.

  • FRUGAL_ONE

The BIGGEST problem this new Cerato has is the price.

Its simply NOT cheap enough, quality/class wise yes, a massive improvement for them, BUT gut felling the all new too Mazda3 is going to blow it out of the water.

MAZDA3 will only be a few $k more at the max., and WELL worth spending the extra coin for vastly superior.

Go on to say the new Mazda3 WILL be the BEST car in its class.

The new Cerato for mine is about equal to the current Mazda3, but alas you dont think that the Japanese are just going to sit still and let Koreans catch up do you?

    Cheers

    F-0

PS/ Now that BIGT’s updated Corolla has proven to be a expensive update on the base, its off the list.
Leaves but 2 vehicles for me, the haonda City and new Mazda3

  • upshift

Should be a very good car,

HOWEVER, with the higher diff ratios used to achieve better fuel consumption in many cars from about 2000-ish, the 5 speed manuals should be 6 speeds.
1st and reverse gears are often too high for hilly terrain, stop start/ heavy traffic and towing, autos are a far better choice for this type of work.

    Buyers be ware !

Hyundai/ Kia, FFS, get out of the stone ages and provide 6 speed manuals in these larger cars.

  • Ryan

Good job Kia. Nice to see both Hyundai and Kia putting so much effort etc into their new cars.

  • KMAU

After all the comments, let me some this up.
For all those comapring this new Cerato to Hondas, Toyotas etc etc…

As we all know this car was designed by Mr Schreyer. So this isn’t a replica design from any other manufacturer, its a design by someone who knows what they are doing! Schreyer previously designed the TT, Bettle & A5.
I personally have driven the vehicle, and let me tell you, for the price it is a very nice car. Yes it is still a KIA, but this is something which consumers will get used to by time. Remember when Honda first came into AUS, it was the crapest Jap car around. Now we could call HONDA one of the best…
Anyway my point here is, the new Cerato will go on sale next week & from my point of view, this car will sell. The price is not a set back as it has all of the features a VW GOLF comes with PLUS rear parking senses at a lower cost.

Ps CA this is a great review – keep up the good work!!!

  • http://queen James Cortez

I don’t care whose designs Kia copies. The new cerato looks good and hey for under 20 grand you can’t be picky. yes the headlights look like those of the civic type R. Check out the engine output: 57.5 KW /litre on 91 octtane fuel. NOT EVEN the $155,0000 pushrod crap HSV 7 liter lump can match and this crap requires either 95 or 98 octane fuel.

GOOD JOB Kia. My only wish: replace the steel wheels with alloys and guaratee you will sell a lot more

  • http://hawk Aaron Pryor

You are right James, in this current economic crisis, find the best value car for the money and the new Cerato is spot on.

Yes,had they put alloy wheels as standard equipment then nothing in Autralia beats it given price, equipment, engine output, looks, warranty.

Bravo Kia and salute to you for sponsoring the Australian Open tennis championship

  • Say NO to Korean cars

Bloody koreans and there crappy cars. Those headlights are so ripped off a honda accord. If ur a serious driver, but a serious car. Driving a hyundai or kia just makes look like an idiot who can’t drive even if that’s not true. If ppl keep buying those pieces of crap from korea, Ford and Holden are gonna go out of business – costing australian their jobs. SAY NO TO KOREA!!!

  • Neutral

This is the first Korean car review that I have actually bothered reading from start to end. The new Cerato does impress me, to be honest. The only complains I have is the Torsion Beam rear suspension and the 4 speed auto. But the auto is not so much a problem because I would be going for the manual if I were to buy one. These things aside, this car looks pretty promising. Can’t wait for the comprehensive review.

I’ll be waiting for the new Mazda 3 review as well. Perhaps CA can do a comparison of the Cerato, Mazda 3, and Lancer? That would be great!

  • Twinny

Wake up Japan – the Koreans are coming.

Korea is the new Japan – nothing wrong with keeping the Japanese honest. Maybe one day we’ll stop thinking Made In Japan means the only they have the best quality. The Hyundai-Kia juggernaut just keeps on rolling along.

I guess Australians dont read up on the quality surveys coming from the country who’s tough enough to have lemon laws (who are they protecting by not having them here too???) and who remembers the systematic concealmeant by Japanese giant Mitsubishi and all their quality control cover ups over the last 20 yrs???

Good on ya Korea – pity Australia cant come up with something like this to keep our industry going and people in jobs. As long as the car makers here insist on the big 6 or 8 instead of a nice efficient 4.

And to all those going on about the 05 Accord – a very nice car to copy off!

  • Sean

Love it!! love the look, style, options & price! If you want a Honda, then buy one at a higher price!
Will be doing a test drive this weekend!

  • John Downey

Good car but ‘ Bring on the 6 speed auto like the Holden Cruze”.
Also when are manufacturers going to put Auto up and down on the driver’s side window. My 1990 Nissan Pulsar Vector had that feature. The Cruze has this and auto down on all other windows. I agree with FrugalOne about gooseneck hinges on the boot. Manufacturers should change them to the newer ones that do not take up boot space.

Apart from those gripes I am very interested in buying one next year. (Hopefully when the 6 speed auto is available) Maybe that will come in around the Australian tennis open.

  • http://None Soso

Cerato 2009 the new design is a well equpied car with a high tec. compared to its price and it is stable on the road with a good safety components.

Good Car ,I do recommend it.

I have one question please from where can I got an owner’s manul book in inglish languge for this car please advice

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au/21005/2009-kia-cerato-first-steer/2/ Frank

I test drove the Corolla, mazda 3, mitsubishi lancer, hyundai i30, honda city and Kia Cerato. I was extremely surprised to find that the Kia Cerato (newly released upgrade with six speed automatic transmission) was by far the best overall package. Don’t take my word for it, take one for a drive……..you WILL be very very IMPRESSED!
