Mitsubishi Mirage launches from $12,990

The Mitsubishi Mirage has launched in Australia with an introductory price of $12,990 that also includes a $1000 Westfield gift voucher (until the end of January), effectively bringing the price down to $11,990.

The Mitsubishi Mirage enters the light car segment packed full of value and standard features, at a very competitive price. Mitsubishi Australia is expecting to sell around 1000 Mirages per month, with the majority being automatics and purchased by female buyers under the age of 35.

The Mirage is powered by a three-cylinder 1.2-litre engine, which produces 57kW of power and 100Nm of torque. It’s available with either a five-speed manual or continuously variant transmission (automatic). It sips just 4.6 litres of standard petrol per 100km in manual form and up to 4.8L/100km for the high-spec LS coupled with an automatic transmission.

Mitsubishi has lacked a choice in the light or city car segment (the second biggest in the market after small cars) since the Colt was discontinued last year. The Mirage will come with Mitsubishi’s well-known five-year unlimited-kilometre warranty and cost $250 for each service for the first 60,000km (at 15,000km service intervals).

From the outside the Mirage’s styling is by no means controversial but tends to stand out when coupled to one of the bright colours on offer.

Standard safety includes front, side and curtain airbags as well as electronic stability control, and although the Mirage is yet to receive an official star rating from ANCAP (expected in February), it’s likely to be a five-star car.

The base model ES receives power windows all around, Bluetooth telephone and audio streaming capabilities (streaming music wirelessly from your smartphone), USB connectivity (with native iPod/iPhone/iPad support) and Auxiliary input and leather steering wheel.

Step up to the ES Sport (from $14,490 driveaway) and 14-inch alloy wheels, roof spoiler and four speakers are added, while the range-topping LS gains automatic windscreen wipers, headlamps and smart entry as well as 15-inch alloys and fog lamps (from $16,990 driveaway).

The Mitsubishi Mirage will be available in six colours: Mulberry, Red Planet , Cool Silver, classic White and Cyber Blue and Midnight Black which are only available on the LS variants.
