2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee facelift: fresh styling, new 8-speed auto

The facelifted 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been revealed ahead of its official unveiling at this week's Detroit auto show.

The updated Jeep Grand Cherokee benefits from fresh exterior styling, a revised cabin featuring new technology and eight-speed automatic transmissions across the range.

Distinguishing the 2014 Grand Cherokee is a smaller set of headlights inspired by the new-generation Chrysler 300, remodelled lower front intakes that are unique to each model and redesigned tail-light clusters with LED lamps.

Other exterior tweaks include a new tailgate that ditches the flipper glass for improved visibility, a capless fuel filler and a shark-fin antenna, while high-grade models receive chrome exhaust outlets (black for SRT), adaptive headlights, LED daytime running lights and power-folding mirrors.

A number of safety features also join the standard package, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with crash mitigation and lane departure warning.

Inside, the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee features a cleaner centre console with larger touchscreens, new steering wheel and gearshift lever designs, and a collection of new trim materials, colours and textures.

Dual-zone climate control is now standard across all models along with Jeep’s third-generation Uconnect infotainment system, which combines hands-free operation of phone, text messaging, audio and navigation functions.

All engines now come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The entry-level 3.6-litre V6 petrol features the ‘845RE’ gearbox while the 3.0-litre V6 diesel, 5.7-litre Hemi V8 and 6.4-litre V8 from the SRT8 feature ZF’s ‘8HP70 TorqueFlite’ auto. All variants of the current Grand Cherokee are equipped with five-speed automatic.

Although exact figures are yet to be revealed, the new transmissions are set to led to reduced fuel figures and improve overall powertrain refinement.

The updated Jeep Grand Cherokee is scheduled to arrive in Australian showrooms in the middle of 2013 following its US market launch during the first quarter of the year.
