Jaguar Land Rover: 10,000 sales within reach for Australia in 2013

The boss of Jaguar Land Rover Australia is aiming to sell 10,000 vehicles across the country in 2013 following this year's Range Rover Evoque-led sales record.

Jaguar Land Rover Asia Pacific managing director David Blackhall admits a five-figure target is ambitious on the back of 2012's predicted 8700-unit result – especially given continuing supply limitations – but believes the demand is there to support the milestone total.

“If I’m not north – well north – of 9000 units for the total company in Australia I’d be very, very disappointed,” Blackhall said.

“If we can get a number that starts with a one, that would be outstanding. The reality is we will struggle with production to support that number. But the market’s definitely there, the Australian market will be there next year.

“I’m bidding like mad for extra production, and because the Aussie dollar keeps doing good things we’ve probably got more of a voice … than we’ve had in the past.”

Land Rover has sold 7310 vehicles – including 2338 Evoques – in Australia to the end of November, up 36.5 per cent over the same period in 2011, while Jaguar has delivered 722 vehicles – 594 of those XFs – an increase of 14.6 per cent.

Blackhall believes – given sufficient supply – the company could have delivered an extra 300-400 Evoques, a “couple of hundred” more Discoverys and roughly another 150 XFs this year, which would have taken 2012’s tally closer to 9300 units. The company also sold its last previous-generation Range Rover in November and does not take delivery of the new model until January.

Jaguar Land Rover Australia’s 2013 target puts it on track to double its sales in the space of just four years. In 2009, JLR sold 4823 vehicles combined: 1010 Jaguars and 3813 Land Rovers.

In addition to the Range Rover, next year will see the introduction of the updated 2013 Land Rover Discovery 4 in January, the launch of the highly anticipated Jaguar F-Type (above) and XFR-S sports cars around mid year, and the expected arrival of the all-new Range Rover Sport at the end of 2013.
