January 12, 2009 by Matt Brogan

Honda’s all-new 2010 Honda Insight hybrid car has made its world debut today at the North American International Auto Show.

Utilising the latest generation of Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist hybrid technology and new, more cost-efficient production methods, the 2010 Insight provides hybrid customers with a new level of affordability, fun-to-drive performance, and fuel economy.

The 2010 Insight will be launched at Honda dealers throughout the United States in the beginning of April 2009 and will be priced below the Civic Hybrid.

“Honda hybrids have always offered great value, high fuel efficiency and a healthy dose of fun near the middle price range in the Honda lineup,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda. “With the introduction of the all-new Insight, we’re opening up Honda’s fun-to-drive, versatile and fuel-efficient hybrid technology to an entirely new group of buyers that previously may not have considered a hybrid because of either image or cost.”

Evoking the advanced and aerodynamic five-door sedan design first deployed on the revolutionary FCX Clarity fuel cell car, the new Insight has a low center of gravity and a spacious five-passenger cabin, offering the kind of driving experience and roomy, versatile interior space that customers have come to expect from Honda.

To help Insight owners realise the full benefits of Honda hybrid technology, the Insight will feature a new interactive, driver-focused fuel economy enhancement technology named the Ecological Drive Assist System. Eco Assist combines multiple functions:

A driver-activated ECON mode that optimises control of the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), engine and related powertrain components to further improve vehicle fuel efficiency; a driver feedback function that uses an innovative speedometer display with changing background colours to provide real-time guidance to the driver on achieving higher fuel efficiency; and a unique fuel-economy scoring function using a plant-leaf graphic to provide feedback to the driver on current-trip driving efficiency and lifetime fuel-efficient driving performance.

All Insights are powered by an advanced 1.3-litre SOHC aluminum-alloy i-VTEC engine and CVT, along with a new generation of Honda’s IMA hybrid system for exceptional fuel economy and fun-to-drive performance.

The Insight’s IMA system incorporates a 10kW electric motor and a compact Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) – recapturing and storing kinetic energy from vehicle braking and deceleration and supplying additional power for acceleration when needed. Packaging of the ultra-compact IMA battery and IPU in the vehicle’s rear floor allows the enhanced utility of a 60:40 split and fold-down rear seat back.

The Insight’s IMA system has the capability to operate exclusively on electric power in certain low to mid-speed driving conditions. It also provides for cylinder deactivation within the petrol engine during deceleration and for engine shutoff when the vehicle is stopped. Insight delivers an estimated maximum driving range in excess of 640km.

It looks like a four-door Honda CRX(88-93) not a prius.

The new Prius looks much better. The front on this thing looks good, but then the side profile and the rear are ugly!!

The tech talk sounds great but I’ll be interested to see the real world figures and costs.
I’d still like to see more of the FCX Clarity fuel cell car. Its potentially possible to buy a hydrogen generator unit so you can refuel at home. Imagine a clean running car that costs a few dollars to fill and you can do it at your own house. I guess the government won\’t want that to take off. They can\’t get big revenue by taxing the fuel.

Looks good.Definately better looking than the Prius. The new Prius look like it has a tumour growth on the front.
The Prius has always been ugly and now Toyota has moved the ugly game a notch up!

      Lol.. FastHONDA… no biased there i supposed…

The front end looks good… the rear looks like the previous Prius with a clear composite panel (quiet new to mass production vehicles actually), my company is investigating its application on more daily vehicles/mass production cars.

That has to be the worst interior I have ever seen. Honda needs to buy some Audi’s to see how to design properly.

Although better looking than the last prius, i think the new prius is better looknig than this. The back of the new prius looks much sleeker than the insight which looks too tall and square.

Darren, i think the interior looks pretty good actually, i think that starting with the current civic, honda has the most interesting and best interior of any brand in the price range. Yes, audi make some fine interior, but they are much more expensive than honda and they are not direct competitors.

I find the green ‘eco’ button an interesting feature, when driving this car, you’ll be too distracted by all the flashing lights and graphics to maximise fuel efficiency, instead of concentrating on driving.

      WAY over the top interior…

I read that Honda are taking on Toyota seriously and selling this for £2000 (~AU$4000) less than a Prius. Its what the market want, despite the non-starter for fuel consumption compared to a diesel.
This Honda is also a far better performer than the current Prius getting more miles/gasllon (or less litres/100km if your that way inclined)

[Your comment is awaiting moderation....I THINK NOT!]

      Was on POLE!

      *****PRIMO!*****

The MAIN reason you buy a hybrid is the fuel superior economy.

The last week leaked brochure/data on this he haonda showed that even though [shock horror!] they copied the SUPERIOR Prius [and the old model at that!] it STILL uses more fuel than the Prius.

I put that down to a BIG FAT FAIL!

      Cheers

      F-0
