Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG: first official images

Images of the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG compact performance four-door 'coupe' undergoing testing have been released by the German car maker.

The high-quality pictures reveal the CLA’s shape and design won’t stray too far from the Concept Style Coupe (below) that previewed the car earlier this year.

Mercedes also released details of the new all-wheel-drive system that will underpin the CLA45 AMG, as well as its hatchback twin, the A45 AMG.

You can read our separate story on the new 4Matic system, but in summary it’s a torque-on-demand system that can send power to the rear axle when and as required.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG, which is due locally a few months after the regular CLA, in early 2014, shares the same engine with the A45 AMG – a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 155kW and more than 400Nm of torque.

Mercedes claims the CLA45 AMG will be “one of the most dynamic, powerful and efficient four-cylinder coupes around”.

The A45 AMG will be a natural rival for the BMW M135i, but the CLA45 AMG has no obvious competitors.

It’s expected to carry a price tag in the vicinity of $85,000, about $5000 more than the A45 AMG that is set to arrive towards the end of 2013.
