Hyundai Santa Fe, Mitsubishi Outlander head list of new five-star ANCAP safety cars

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has rounded out 2012 by awarding five new cars the maximum five-star safety rating.

The Hyundai Santa Fe, Mitsubishi OutlanderCitroen DS4, Infiniti FX and the Kia Sorento all achieved the top rating in the program’s final round of crash testing for 2012.

Of the 48 vehicles assessed by ANCAP this year, 39 cars (81 per cent) scored top marks, while eight managed four stars and just one, the Mahindra Pik-Up, scored three. Encouragingly, no vehicle was awarded one or two stars in 2012.

The all-new Hyundai Santa Fe (top) became the second-highest rated vehicle in ANCAP’s ‘Large SUV’ class – its score of 35.63 out of 37 putting it behind only the considerably more expensive Mercedes-Benz M-Class.

The Santa Fe’s sister car, the updated Kia Sorento, scored 33.21, trailing the Hyundai mostly in the frontal offset crash test component (13.25 out of 16 for the Kia versus 15.63 for the Hyundai), while the Infiniti FX (above) scored 33.48.

The new third-generation Mitsubishi Outlander (above) became the third-highest rated ‘Medium SUV’ according to ANCAP, scoring 35.58 points to leave it trailing only the Volvo XC60 (36.53) and the new-generation Honda CR-V (35.91).

The Citroen DS4 (below) also performed strongly, scoring 35.68 out of 37 in ANCAP’s assessment of the crash test conducted by Euro NCAP.
