Victorian hoon laws nab a Vantage
December 30, 2008 by Matt Brogan
The owner of a new Aston Martin Vantage has had his car impounded for 48 hours under Victorian anti-hoon laws after the police air wing detected the driver travelling at more than 50km/h over the posted speed limit on Saturday.
Caught travelling at just over 150km/h on the Bolte Bridge, which provides access into the Melbourne CBD, the car was intercepted some eight kilometres later. The driver has been charged with traffic related offences and the car was towed to an impound lot in Collingwood.
Acting Sen-Sgt Mark Beyers said police were out in force to catch dangerous drivers.
“If you drive like an idiot you will be caught” he said, “The new year is a time for celebration and not for police to deliver yet another death message.”

Hah.
Spanner.
lol Lucky anyone with a Vantage can buy it out of there again in seconds.
Hoons should rent cars. They can impound someone elses that way.
they cant impound a rental car, stolencar or a borrowed car (unless the owner knows you have it).
well thats going to stand out next to all those fully sick 1988 Holden Calais already in the pound :)
All i can say is… that sucks. I know i drive on that bolt bridge everyday and everyone around me is doing more than 120km on it. 150 would have just got that car out of first.
Copers got nothing better to do than use a choper that cost 2K of tax payers money evrey 2 hours to operate, Go down rusel street and grab a deler or something, im sure ASTONS are way more caperbale than 150km/h what a joke,
Had the driver been driving a clapped out unroadworthy wreck at or below the speed limit the police would not have done anything.
Sarcasm intended.
Busted by the eye in the sky,a least he’ll probobly be able at pay the fine and the car is only impounded for 48 hours,he’ll just have to drive is wifes v8 M3 for 2 days, poor dude.(Sarcasm intended as well)
Which goes to show that there is not much point buying fast cars on Aussie roads when the traffic laws are so stringent.. you can’t expect people to drive a vantage around at 60kph.. you could do that in a toyota corolla.
I can just see the policeman getting into the car and saying to his fellow officers “Look at me!..look at me!, I’m in a Aston Martin huh!..huh!”
Wow, what a crimnal this fella, driving at a pathetic 150kmh in a car made to travel at 200kmh plus. Hoon laws just prove one point: the most unpopulated country in the world with the good and big road network that is barely used in some sections has got the strictest speed limits and enforcement. Maybe the guy should have gone 200km out of town on a deserted empty stretch of road to see what his baby could do – hmmmmmmmmmmm, no actually, that would not work either since even a deserted, empty stretch of road with a 10km clear visibility and no traffic is 100km/h speed limited. What a joke.
Seems to me that there are a lot of so called car enthusiasts here who condone speeding who sound like actual wannabe hoons to the majority of the Aussie population. HAVE ANY OF YOU ACTUALLY ATTENDED A HIGH SPEED CRASH? I have and its not pretty when a car doing 150 hits a stationary object or even a slower moving object like a car driving at the speed limit. The faster you drive the harder the hit, the more damage that is done and the more likelyhood of death occuring. YOU LOT COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SPEED LIMITS SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF. You can go on about the Autobahns etc but have any of you actually drivenon it? Again I have and if you think there are no deaths or serious injury related accidents on it you seriously need a reality check. They do happen and families have suffered the same pain of losing loved ones on it just as they do here. THIS WON’T HAPPEN TO ME IS STILL PREVELENT DESPITE AROUND 30 DEATHS NATIONALY OVER THE LAST 10 DAYS AND MANY OF THEM AS A RESULT OF SPEEDING. All the training in the world defensive driving wise wont compensate for the milliseconds you have to try and correct a car heading for a life changing motor vehicle crash.
Furthermore if Peter Brock can die in a high speed crash in a vehicle built for speed with race type safety features in it which far outdo modern cars then anyone can regardless of driving experience and defensive driving skills. I have 22 years driving experience and 20 of them after doing the highest quality defensive driving courses and even I realise that one minor mistake at high speed can result in myself ending up in a grave with my cousin who was the victim of a road fatality.
A hoon is somebody doing burnouts and drags on suburban streets, not driving quickly on a freeway.
Frosty, more people proportionally are injured and killed in accidents at or below the speed limit than above, FACT.
Just check out the various state accident stats for the past 30 years. Especialy those relating to 60k zones. This does not mean that one should drive faster in 60k zones, just drive in a manner that is safe, ie. aware of what is around, and not into the same space as another vehicle which has right of way.
If speeding is the cause of road accidents then the only way to reduce the number of accidents is to increase the speed limits until no car is capable of speeding.
Australia has one of the highest crash fatality rates per capita in the western world with one of the lowest maximum speed limits. It is driver training and licence testing which has the biggest impact on reducing crash fatality rates, not speed limits and fines. That is a fact born out over decades of studies in europe. Even the USA has scrapped its crazy speed limits of 55mph to 70 – 80 mph (115 – 130k’s) with a significant DROP in crash fatality rates.
I have driven exstesivly in europe on their motorways. The police are far more alert to bad driving practices like not keeping right (left), not indicating, driving too close, cutting people off, erratic lane changes. In fact just about every poor driving habit that the pigs here totally ignore because they are so indoctrinated with the speed kills mantra.
Speeding is relative to a numerical value painted on a metal sign, It is not some law of physics.
Ow no a super car doing 150 in a straight line.
Rebel, still does not alter the facts of my comments. The faster you speed the less time your reflexes have to react = the more likely you are to avoid a accident and the harder you will hit something. THIS IS THE LAW OF PHYSICS. If you think these are not facts then I would hate to be around you when you are driving and would hope that you got caught before killing someone if in fact you drove without the physical facts of speed and mass being more likely to cause damage and more damage at that. You prang a car at 150 and I will guarantee your car is a write off and that you will have life threatening injuries.
Should of actually said = the more likely you are not to avoid a accident.
Sure, just increase the speed limit to 115 – 130km/h, there will be idiots who will do 180km/h and still claim that it\’s safe.
There are a lot of people who call themselves enthusiasts and allow themselves to do things others can\’t (or won\’t) on the road. The thing is, they\’re sharing the road with other people. They allow themselves to do 20km/h over the limit but they really get upset with other people doing 5km/h under the limit, even if those people are traveling in the left lane.
Beside driver training, respect for other people is another thing that we have to learn.
Look, fine, yes the Aston is easily capable of doing 150kmh. But christ, its not hard to see that on a public road with lots of other cars doing significantly less, that those speeds and the speed differential between the Aston and all the other cars around it, makes that speed dangerous. Driving skill and wallet size are not related, for all we know this guy can’t drive for shit, so you can’t say ‘well its an Aston Martin Vantage, its safe at 150kmh’. It might be, the driver mightn’t.
And yes jester, in long empty straight roads where you can see for 10km straight (ie NT) it does make a little sense to be able to drive faster than 100 (or 130). But this is the Bolte Bridge, its rarely empty. Its not 10km of clear visibility and no traffic, ever.
I don’t reckon speeding is the leading cause of accidents (inattention is), but 50kmh over is too far. People need to realise that sometimes the what ifs happen. What if I run over a screw on the road and have a blowout at 150kmh, and become a 1.7 tonne missile that hits another car that was going 80kmh. I know being young its tempting to think it won’t happen, but if it does it isn’t just your life that your playing with.
told u AUS is the worst place to own a supercar
whats the point of ownin this kinda beauty when u cant even take it out for a sprint
to me,speeding isnt the real cause of accidents if u know when and where to..
come on,give us a break
Ha Ha serve the twit right. If you want an Aston come to the UK were a 150 is barely beginning to spped. I blimped my Vectra to 165 today. tee hee. Any fuzz reading his i’m just bragging of course.
Forsy, the point is that unsafe roads kill people. You dont need to speed. Any road which has opposing flows of traffic with only a white line separating them is, by design, extremely unsafe. As for power poles and trees and stuff along the side of the road, well thats another story, and its also how Peter Brock died, sideways into a tree. He wasn’t going that fast either I might add.
More gaurd rails to stop cars from leaving the road into trees etc, more dividers for opposing traffic flows, less trees and power poles and sign posts adjacent to the roads. That will save lives.

Frosty is clearly a traffic cop, and all his so-called facts are drawn directly from a police booklet detailing why speed is dangerous.I guess you have to pay your mortgage somehow matey.
To answer you some other questions Frosty – yes, driven on Autobahn, yes, attended several high-speed training courses.
The biggest problem with the speed law as I see it is that it is less of an offence to drive 64kmh in a 40kmh zone past the school, then it is to drive 150kmh in a 100kmh zone with nobody around you. Do you see my point, cops and politicians and judges only see the numbers, not the surroundings.
The other thing is that all these anti-speed advocates state: what if you have a blow out, what if your brakes fail, what if someone steps in the road in front of you blah blah blah.
What if the comet comes from the sky and hits you while sitting in the car – all this “what if” is dumb, its dumb since some granpa doing 20kmh BELOW the speed limit runs a red liht and t-bones the family car and kills its occupants, OR some idiot not paying any attention changes lanes without indication, causes car next to him to swerve, lose control and kill them.
And don’t even start me with the rotten governments, and their belief that advanced driving courses make drivers more dangerous. This is a FACT, this is what the government thinks.
So you tell me who is responsible and who can reduce the road toll. Give me education and better roads any day, compared to some copper in the bushes with a radar/laser giving tickets for enthusiastic driving, and a media blabbing about how speed, and only speed is dangerous.
NOT providing better advanced driving courses is more dangerous
NOT providing safer roads is more dangerous.
Speed – easiest to detect, easiest to talk about, easiest to blame for everything, easiest to collect revenue from. Simple.
……..and just to finish this topic off.
ASK YOURSELVES THE FOLLOWING QUESTION:
Who will stop quicker and in shorter distance -
A) Aston MArtin V8 Vantage doing 150kmh
B) Fully laden truck doing 99kmh
When you answer A or B then you will see why the speed laws are dumb, yet again.
……….and if you want to talk about speed differential being really dangerous.
What about the cyclists doing 15km/h in a 100km/h zone.
If cyclists are allowed to ride 2-abreast with the speed differential of 85km/h, then this offence is not serious enough.
Think about it people, just use your heads. Speed laws and many other traffic laws in Aus are an absolute joke.
Clapped up Cortina with drum brakes doing 100 in a 100 is fine, but Lamborghini Murcielago doing 101 in a 100 is an offence ?!?!?!?!?
Well, here is a solution, Governments if you are listening – build us a God damned Oz Nurburgring, open every day, $25 per lap, no speed limits, 25kms long, 2km straight for top speed runs, plenty of corners, and we can all move forward then ;))))
I just want the Dauphin helicopter mentioned above that only costs $2k for 2 hours. I would love to only pay that much for a helicopter like that! TVFPIC. On topic, you take the risk, you must be prepared to pay the price. Simple as that!
stupid fool…serve him right!
Exceeding the speed limit and speeding are not the same thing. Of course speeding is dangerous – by definition it’s exceeding the safety margins and/or physical/mental limits. If visibility is particularly poor (such as when it’s foggy) or roads are icy 50km/h could well be speeding, yet that’s still under the posted speed limit.
Likewise 120 or 130 down the good sections of the Hume on a bright sunny day is NOT speeding, but it is exceeding the posted speed limit.
I’m all for lower speed limits in built-up areas for the good of the pedestrian, but I agree with several posters that our highways are insanely slow.
It was interesting to read the stats in paper on the weekend. The highest road-toll over Christmas was in Victoria, the lowest….NT. VIC has just come off the back off the ‘wipe off 5′ campaign and still seems to be largely confined to 100km/h in many areas (rather than 110km/h). NT has 130km/h of course (boo! bring back the unlimited) – yes there’s less people but the stats are kinda interesting.
Personally, I’d like to see our arterial highways opened up. Perhaps the ‘average speed’ cameras like in VIC could be used to impose a ‘green’ charge. Average 80km/h (or whatever is the ‘greenest’ speed) in a section – no charge. Average more than that, get charged a proportional amount. That means no more breaking speed limits! by all means do 160km/h, but expect to pay for the privilege to offset the carbon burn. This way the government still gets their revenue (which is what the speeding campaign is all about, let’s face it) and the police are free to look for dangerous driving instead of hiding in the bushes.
guy deserves the ticket, anyone who claims otherwise is a fool.
As long as there are cars on the road, there will be road fatalities. The only way the system could ever change is if they took away our ability to control a vehicle altogether. With modern technology, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is on the horizon.
Anyone ever heard the phrase:
“Guns don’t kill, people do”
The same applies to cars. Unless there is a mechanical failure in the vehicle, I would think that most road fatalities would be caused by bad drivers, people who don’t follow the road rules, or just idiots. It’s the minority who make the majority suffer.
Speed Kills is just a revenue tool, nothing more or less.
Hey Mike and Summerschool – I see you have answered the A or B correctly.
The only fools are people like yourselves blinded by obedience and lacking logical thinking. You are sad.
Listen ‘Jester’..
What you fail to realise is even though the Aston is built for those speeds and yes it will stop in a shorter distance, that does NOT mean he is above the law and can speed when sharing the road with OTHER drivers. What you FAIL to realise is that the most important safety feature of any car is the DRIVER. I have seen plenty of smashes with porsches, lambos, and lets not forget that mess that Veyron owner made of his car. You want the government to pick and chose a custom speed limit depending on the capabilities of a car? The only requirement is that the car is roadworthy. You sir, are a fool. This requires no further discussion.

Im not talking about the ideal situation…sure there should be a track built for this like nuremberg. Sure its safer to speed in certain cars. I’m not ignorant and I understand your points. What im saying is that your points don’t matter. He still fully deserves this ticket under the CURRENT laws just as much as anyone else. Grant him the permission to speed and you must grant everyone else as a precedent. Thats all I’m going to say on this one. Your fighting a losing battle. You are an ignorant fool. When sharing the road with others what if someone else crashing into HIM. Lets forget about his car for a second. Your head is so far up your ass its not funny. No wonder I dont post here anymore.
If i was broken down on the road and had to pick between a loaded truck doing 100 and the aston doing 150 to stop in time ill take the aston doing 150 to safely stop
