Mazda CX-5 trio pounces into SEMA

A trio of custom Mazda CX-5 SUVs developed by Mazda North America's design team has been revealed at this week's 2012 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The three Mazda CX-5 models have each been given their own distinctive style, exhibiting three different looks for the popular family SUV.

The Mazda CX-5 180 has been designed with active Southern Californians in mind. Loaded with Burton Cheetah snowboards and a Rusty surfboard, the CX-5 180 features several stylised details related to two iconic Sothern Californian locations, Big Bear Lake and Point Dume, including a topographical map, seasonal statistics for the snowboarding and surfing hot spots and their GPS coordinates.

Big Bear Lake's summit is seen along the left side of the CX-5 180 while Point Dume is represented along the right.

The car’s blue body colour is contrasted with red highlights on the grille surround, across the headlights and onto the brake calipers that sit behind Mazda Design custom-built 20-inch black chrome alloy wheels.

Inside, Aqua leather covers the seats, steering wheel, door panels, armrests and handbrake boot while white leather inserts and red and white stitching add detail.

The sleek-looking matt black CX-5 Urban (pictured top) shows off a custom paint process developed by Mazda Design with dark surfaces featuring multi-dimensional shadows thanks to triangular shapes that reflect light differently.

Customised wheel arch extensions sit above menacing 22-inch Ace Alloy Scorpio matt black wheels and are joined by a Racing Beat dual exhaust.

Finally the CX-5 Dempsey: a car that Mazda says was named after the US actor and avid racer Patrick Dempsey because of his two competitive passions, motorsport and cycling.

As such the CX-5 Dempsey features a Specialised Bicycle S-Works Tarmac road bike hanging off the back and a Thule Atlantis rooftop cargo box along with a high-contrast custom paint scheme with bright red highlights, matt black tailgate and "CX-5" decals.

The Japanese SUV sits on 20-inch black chrome alloy wheels that individually feature one red spoke.

Black and red again leads the design inside with leather covering the seats, steering wheel, shifter boot, armrests and door panels.

The Mazda CX-5 has proved its success around the world, with 11,528 vehicles sold in Australia year-to-date.
