Chrysler to shut down production for one month

By Matt Brogan |

Chrysler LLC is shutting down all its North American factories for a month due to the ongoing credit crisis and plunging sales, but Chrysler Australia says the move will have little effect on it.

Chrysler announced today that all plants will be idled at the end of production Friday, December 19.

Chrysler Australia spokesman Jerry Stamoulis said, “A month down in production at this stage won’t make a difference to consumers considering our vehicles. This is a calculated decision to match production to demand.”

Employees will not return to work any sooner than January 19th, 2009. At the moment we don’t have any further news or comment from Chrysler but will be sure to keep you posted.

Is this a market forced shut down? Or the standard shut down over the Christmas period to allow maintenance, retooling where nessecary and such as per the larger majority of (not just automotive) factories?
19th to the 19th sounds pretty normal if you were to ask me.

FIAT are shutting its factorys in Italy for 1 month too.

    Others the same too.

You think they would have slowed down production months ago, instead kept going full steam ahead and now have yards/wharfs full of vehicles and no buyers..

CUT THE PRICES GUYS, i will put my hand up for a i30 or Corolla at the right price

    Cheers

Ford Australia, Holden and Toyota are shutting down their Aust factories for roughly a month as well. As I said this just sounds like the standard shut down that has happened every year that I have been involved with the industry (read 25). I’d lay money on it that at least 3/4′s of the factories around the world follow suit. Perhaps teh stretching out to a month may be different, but the usual is at least 3 weeks.

Frontman, usual shutdown is 2 weeks.

You are right however, most are bringing forward or extending shutdowns. Even Toyota Aus.

“Spokeswoman Angie Kozleski says the normal two-week holiday shutdown will be extended …..”

    Bret,
the usual shutdown depends on where in the week Xmas day falls.

this year it falls mid week, and you will find the common shut down period will be 3 weeks.

when it falls in a less awkward part of a week, the usual shut down will be 2 weeks
