Could an Aston Martin Cygnet city car powered by one of the brand’s massive V12 engines be a legitimate production reality?

Well, going on recent industry banter, Aston Martin has already completed a feasibility study on an engine-transplanted Toyota iQ-based Cygnet, with positive results.

UK publication Autocar says sources at the British marque have suggested the feasibility study showed the 6.0-litre V12 powerplant seen under the bonnets of cars like the DB9 and new Vanquish fits into the baby Aston’s engine bay without “extensive modifications”, although admits “significant but not insurmountable” upgrades would be necessary.

Considering the engine produces 428kW and 620Nm when encouraging the 1739kg Vanquish, power would likely be stemmed to shift along the 988kg Aston Martin Cygnet, normally propelled by a 72kW/125Nm 1.33-litre four-cylinder.

While Autocar believes that Aston Martin could well end up going ahead with the plan, if customer demand were to prove sufficient, others are convinced the rumour is just that.

CarAdvice has contacted Aston Martin for comment.

While a V12-powered Cygnet production car sounds like a pipe dream, the idea is somewhat reminiscent of the Nissan Juke-R, a compact crossover impregnated with the 404kW/628Nm twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V6 powerplant from the GT-R supercar. Nissan is producing a handful of Juke-Rs for fanatical customers who are happy to part with £400,000 ($620,000) for the insane little SUV.

stupid story. the engine is as big as the car. it is not possible unless it is a remote control car
and then it is pretty stupid again :)

    • 5reasonreviews.com

Said it below – but it would fit if you put it in the boot and take out the rear seats

What is stupid is that this car will be over A$1m i.e. more expensive than a proper Aston…

  • Wile E Coyote

    Eel head on steroids .
Imagine the torque steer on this sucker.

    • Amlohac

Imagine steering… at all. Because the only steering you’ll get will probably be in your imagination with that much power

“fits into the baby Aston’s engine bay without “extensive modifications”.
I call bullshit on this one.

If they can do it with the Joke, I’m sure the same will happen here with the Cygnet. Next thing we’ll see will be an iQ with a LFA V10 in it, lol.

Incidentally, for anyone who watches Fifth Gear (new series currently on Channel BT), have a look at this week’s episode, Jason Plato mucking around in a Joke R and about how they built the thing. Pretty impressive I must say…

My advice to Aston: just do it.
And get Jeremy Clarkson to drive it.

It may seem like a stupid idea. But a few limited edition models wont hurt.

    • Zaccy16

i agree, there aston not toyota they should be allowed to stupid things like that!

    • peddy.d

Volkswagen put the 6L W12 in the Mk V Golf and Jeremy Clarkson did drive it! He said it was rubbish though, so i can only imagine that it would be even worse in this car. But hey i agree go crazy aston martin, build it!

  • Derek

I think you’ll find that if the rumor is legitimate they are planning on putting the V12 in the rear just as VW did with the Golf W12, absolutely not possible to put it up front

  • Al

I think a V8 vantage motor would suffice

Although I don’t believe this is legit, I really hope it is!

The whole idea of the Cygnet was to boost Aston’s average fuel economy. This idea does not achieve that. Once they have taken the 1.0L out of this, they could swap it with the motor they just took out of the DBS. There should be enough room to leave it in the front.

  • 5reasonreviews.com

Thats right – the actual story is that it would go where the boot and rear seats are

It is the same set up we saw in the Golf GTI W12

  • tiddy

Some how me thinks, this is a case of Aston engineers thinking out loud…I wonder what would happen if we put a V12 into a Cygnet????, feasible, but unlikely

  • http://www.facebook.com/iNiff Jeremy Hart

feasibility study is not plan to build.

  • Altezza

The V12 power is way too overkill for a small car like IQ. My advice is not to proceed ahead with the plan. Aston Martin already making a big mistake when they use Toyota IQ as donor car to build Cygnet. Truly a disaster for a British icon.
