Dont know if it was the poor quality video and sound but that speaker in the evo sounded like it was distorting really badly.
Theres a black R32 getting around where i live and it looks and sounds really sweet, not sure i’d buy one though. Come to think of it i’m not sure i’d buy any of these cars, they just dont give me that “WOW i want one of those!” feelings.

  2. Tom says:

Wouldn’t the most obvious choice for a sub 70k sports sedan be a HSV Clubsport or a FPV F6? How are these both omitted from the review?

  3. zahmad says:

Tom, those two have been covered the whole world over…

  4. Richo says:

HOLD on a second… since when has a BMW 135i (coupe), subaru WRX STI (hatch) and golf r32 (hatch) been considered sports sedans? Isn’t a sedan something with 4 doors and a boot? Am i missing something? Otherwise good article though

  5. george says:

Yeah, the name of the article is a bit confusing. not a sedan comparo at all! still a good read though.

  6. Allan D says:

“Wouldn’t the most obvious choice for a sub 70k sports sedan be a HSV Clubsport or a FPV F6? How are these both omitted from the review? ”

You can buy LS3 clubby for 51k drive away brand new these days. I know, I just bought one, which makes it an even more appealing proposition.

By I agree, why the omission of FPV and HSV from the sedan shootout?

  7. Tom says:

So true at none of these even being sedans…

  8. Duck says:

Once again CarAdvice there is only one ’sedan’!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Adam says:

So, in fact. There’s only one winner…. :)

and that’s the only sedan in the field. EVO!

  10. Crouchy says:

Sedan? Did they change the meaning?

  11. Tom says:

The evo is clearly the winner regardless, they had to go to a female who pretty much said “the golf is the best because its not overpowered”

    in other words… its slow.

  12. Paul Maric says:

    It didn’t take long!

Here’s the explanation from the editor regarding the use of Sport Sedan:

“A point of clarification, a Sportscar is a vehicle designed for sporting use, it usually has two doors and two seats plus a removable roof – this has become a little more confused in recent years due to folding metal roofs, etc so i.e a BMW Z4 is a Sportscar a Porsche 911 is a Sportscar.

A vehicle that has sedan origins and has been modified or enhanced for a more sporting use is a Sport Sedan, all the cars in our test fall into this classification.”

    Hopefully that fixes any confusion.

Both the HSV and FPV equivalents were not available for inclusion in this test unfortunately. They would have most certainly been worthy contenders.

  13. ray says:

It still says ’sedan’ in the heading so I was expecting to see an FPV or HSV in the mix. not a couple of hatches or coupes. Maybe even a TRD Aurion (please correct me if I am wrong about the TRD).

  14. Neo says:

there is no way an R32 is even close to the EVO. FPV and HSV should of been in there.

Allan D congrats on your buy 51k is a steal. id love an F6 over a Clubby but at 51k id take the clubby the LS3 hammers and the sounds great you would also have some money left over for extras.

  15. Gibbo says:

I will have to agree with the others in saying that there was only one car in that review that fits the description of a sedan, On paper the BMW definately would be my pick: 6 cylinders, 2 turbos, rear wheel drive and a proper manual transmission.

  16. Wheelnut says:

I still don’t see haow a VW Golf Hatchback cn be considered to be a Spports Sedan…. I mean going by that definintion which is broader than Australia the Maloo also qualifies as a Sports Sedan – Get Real

A car is primarily defined or classified by its body style be it a Hatchback – like the VW Golf or Peugeot 207; a Sedan – Like the Mitsubishi Lancer or Toyota Aurion; a Wagon – Like the BMW Touring or Volvo V50; a Ute – like the Falcon or VE SS; a Coupe – like the Porsche 911 or Konigsiegg

Then you look at either the engine be it 4cyl 6cyl or V8; be it Naturally Aspirated; Turbo or Supercharged.
Or the Transmission be it Manual, Automatic or DSG.
Or the Driveline be it FWD RWD 4WD or AWD
Or the number of doors be it 2, 3, 4 or 5 door.

That way you are able to make a more realistic comparison as you are then comparing cars of a similar body style with similar engines; drivelines etc

Because the above characteristics all have a different immapct on a cars performance handling and aerodynamics.
Therefore to compare a diversee group of cars like this doesn’t give an accurate result – unless of course you are looking for an overall winner from all cars available on the market but that would just take to long

The fact you call it a “Sport Sedan Shootout” implies that the cars will have what is traditionally accepted to be a sedan body

I mean you wouldn’t do a Hot Hatch comaprsion and include a Hummer would you Paul?

  17. Biggles says:

Personally, I think the Sport Sedan Shootout could have used just a few more hot hatches ;)

Just kidding, nice review, nice video! Good to hear a womens’ perspective on sports cars too.

  18. Reckless1 says:

The poor comprehension skills of most of the posters is dramatically exposed here.

Even after Paul’s explanation, the drivel continues.

Get over it numnuts – out of the 4 cars compared here, one was preferred, and one was least preferred, and the other two were somewhere in the middle.

If you aren’t interested in the car that “won” you are free to be interested in a Hummer instead, or be like some people that love Ford KAs

  19. Frenchie says:

The only sports sedan here was the EVO in my opinion. Comparing these four though I do like the VW.

  20. Fasthonda says:

The Golf R32 is a good car but when the lady had the deciding vote and said it’s not “overpowered”..well….it didn’t really give me the confidence in the final decision.
    The STI looked the best!

  21. Ivan says:

Wait a minute. The R32 was the winner but it was the furthest from being a sedan!!! Hatchback with 3 doors!!! What is going on here?

If only CA just simply change the title to something like: “Under $70k medium sport car shootout”. That would be good enough (would also justify the ommision of the HSV and FPV).

  22. Ben Larden says:

That was a very novice comparo. I love how the chick goes I like them because “they both take corners” lol. What a gee up. The R32 is not within coee of any of the other 3 “sedans”.

BMW FTW, closely followed by the evo. On CA though, this result will be wishful thinking. It’s AWD or bust for these guys.
