2008 Mercedes Benz CL65 coupe

March 30, 2007 by Alborz Fallah

Lets just start by confirming that we really have no idea if this car will come to Australia, however from past experience, AMG has never held out on us so there is no reason to doubt this cars presence next year. This is the new AMG 2008 Mercedes Benz CL65 coupe. This is the best on offer from AMG.

2007 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class Coupe

The previous post about the 2007 CL class coupe, was a little confusing, why would the AMG CL63, have less torque than the CL600? Obviously because AMG hadn’t gotten to play with the V12 bi-turbo yet. Now they have, and they came out with a car able to go from 0-100km/hr in 4.4 seconds with the 200km/h mark passing in just 13.3 seconds.

Mercedes confirms the CL65 has an enormous 612hp (450kW) at 5,100rpm with torque electronically limited to 1,000Nm and available from just 2,000rpm. Yes, this car has over 1,000Nm of torque. If we compare that to the king of Australian torque the FPV Typhoon has only 550Nm – making it almost half of this beast.

To go along with all this power a free-flow sports exhaust with two twin chromed V12-design tailpipes is fitted, Also catalytic converters with tri-metallic coating should help the car give a better response from a cold start as well as more efficient exhaust-gas treatment.

So what poor gearbox has to deal with 1,000Nm of torque? No 6-7 Speed gearbox would take this much punishment so AMG had to go back to the drawing board and come out with an AMG prepped five-speed auto gearbox with paddle shifters located behind the wheel.

The driver can pick three different modes, “Sport”, “Comfort” and “Manual” driving programs. Apart from simply changing the gear ratios, the driver also gets better accelerator response and the spring and damper settings of the sports suspension that’s enhanced with Mercedes’ Active Body Control.

This monster rides on 20″ AMG alloys and with the best brake package money can buy, the CL65 goes from 100km/h-0 in just 35.6m.

So now that we’ve kept you reading, how about a video review of the CL65?

Dear Mercedes Australia, please bless us with this car.
