Volvo Car Australia has confirmed production of the Volvo C30 hatch has come to an end, with the brand’s smallest model having already been removed from its European line-up.

With no direct replacement in the pipeline, the compact C30 coupe will be replaced – at least in the short term – by the all-new Volvo V40 five-door hatchback, which is due in local showrooms in December.

Volvo is running out remaining stock of the Volvo C30, and may potentially offer some end-of-production special edition variants to help clear the last vehicles.

The three-door C30 was first released in 2006, after a design based on the Volvo SCC concept car, which was inspired by the iconic Volvo 1800PS sports wagon, itself a derivative of the classic P1800 sports car.

Since launching in Australia in 2007, Volvo has sold around 2900 C30s across the country, with sales peaking during its first full year on sale in 2008. Just 238 were sold in the first nine months of 2012, averaging 26 sales per month.

The all-new Volvo V40 hatch range, which is expected to start below $40,000, will be bolstered by the availability of the V40 R-Design variants, the V40 Cross Country, and a more powerful V40 Polestar version in the short-term future.

It was an interesting car to look at I suppose. But it’s no big loss, there are plenty of credible alternatives around in this very crowded market.

yeah exactly, the v40 will be much more practical alternative and should sell more

I liked the C30, it was individual. The V40 in ti’s current guise dosen’t make it for me. Just another 4 door hatch (That’s the crowed area of the market)

They should bring out a new model, the C30 wasn’t a bad car, and the V40 is larger, so this appeals to younger people. I must say though, the V40 is quite a mean car killing off 3 cars (C30,V50,S40) Haha..

I always loved the rear , but the rest just looked a little plain jane , up against the rocco and the megane it was tough going in style .

I had one as a loaner a few times.  The s40 is a nicer car to drive, the C30 seemed front heavy (I know it is just imagination, but there it is).  Also the doors are stupidly long making it hard to get out when you are in a parking space, and they (the doors) are too plasticky inside, probably you notice that because they are so big, but it cheapens the interior.  And they are only 4 seats not 5.   But they look much smarter on the outside than the s40.

Almost bought one last year. One of the few cars in my opinion that looks great in any colour and I still often turn and look when one goes past. I thought 2 comfortable seats in the back was better than 3 uncomfortable ones. But I too was put off by the long doors (I have a very narrow garage) and a few niggles like the very messy luggage area cover. Also, I thought it was just a tad expensive for what you get.

I agree with almost everything you write, other than the long doors and luggage area. I was looking at some second hand ones and noticed there is an insert which tidies the luggage area up. The other thing, the doors, you want them big in two door car. Nothing worse than a Marina coupe look, where they used the front doors off the sedan in the coupe – How nasty was that? Tell you what i do in narrow garages, let the passengers out first, if any, then park to one side so there is room to open the door. Simple.

Yeah, I remember narrow garages. I used to live in a unit with an 18 x 9 garage and used to squeeze a Mazda B1800 and a 750 Yamaha in using that same technique.
