Suzuki sales defy economic downturn

December 5, 2008 by Matt Brogan

Despite the hard economic times pushing cars sales as a whole in to a dive, some cheaper brands are quietly flourishing including Suzuki who remain on track for a sixth successive year of record sales.

The brand has seen a total year to date sales figure of some 20,793 units, up five per cent on the company’s total sales for 2007.

“The Suzuki line-up continues to defy the downward sales trend of all but a handful of manufacturers,” said Suzuki Australia General Manager Tony Devers. “Suzuki sales year to date are up five per cent over 2007, compared to the total market which is down nearly three percent. This strong result has us on track to pass last year’s total, and for Suzuki to notch up its sixth successive record sales year”.

Perhaps surprisingly are the individual gains made by some models in the range, most noticeably the SX4 which boasts a 100 per cent jump in sales figures.

Jimny sales are up by a third (33 per cent), Grand Vitara is up by three per cent and APV sales up nearly 28 per cent. The increased volume taking Suzuki’s total market share to 2.2 per cent.

“We are confident of finishing the year on a high, with good buying available across the range including drive away pricing on Swift Sport, Jimny, Grand Vitara and SX4,” said Devers.

Great little cars that do everything a Toyota does only at much less cost – go Suzi!

Its not a real surprise Suzuki are doing so well because they build first class vehicles. I am particularly impressed with their Grand Vitara range & believe they will have a brand new model Jimny coming out which should be worth waiting for. Well done Suzuki.

    Cheers !

Hey Lightbulb, let’s not get too carried away.

Suzuki has lots of great vehicles, but the diesel GV is not one of them, due to the engine which is far too yesteryear, and a poor conversion of an east-west design.

One family member has a Swift S and it’s a fantastic little car.

I hear the best place to do deals on Suzuki Vehicles is at Rick Damelian Suzuki @ Haberfield, Sydney. My Mate just bought a car below cost price from a guy there called James.

No 1 Suzuki Dealer. I have heard the same thing. They also have a bridge going for below cost.

Incredible stuff really, as you would think James would be loosing them money or something. ;)

I will definitely buy a cheaper one. In times like this, we need to be practical first and set aside expensive cars. At least for the time being…

    Hi Reckless1:
Yes, I have to agree with you about your comments regarding the diesel version Grand Vitara not being one of their better engines. I was mainly referring to their 2.4 petrol model which from all reports is a good engine.

    Cheers !
