Hyundai Genesis V8 Rear Wheel Drive

I think Australian V8 fans are going to have a heart attach if/when this car makes it to Australia. The Hyundai Genesis is Hyundais first venture in V8 Sedan territory. Powered by Hyundai’s new 4.6L Tau twin-cam, 32-valve, all-alloy V8 engine, Hyundai has not only made a V8 sedan, but also, dare I say, a good looking one too.

Hyundai Genesis V8 Rear Wheel Drive

Currently Hyundai intends to release this car next year in left-hand-drive markets only and there is no real confirmation if it will ever be made in right-hand-drive and make its way to Australia.

The Genesis has a weight distribution of 53:47 front/rear for balanced handling as well as more refined steering characteristics. The car also comes with ESP as standard.

Hyundai have changed a great deal in the last few years. They have changed so much that they are now happy to compare themselves to the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Hyundai says that the Genesis will be utilizing ultra high-tensile steel in critical areas in the body shell which will provide the Genesis with a 12-14 percent higher dynamic torsional rigidity and a lower body-in-white weight than the BMW 5-series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Not bad!

The power

If we simply just ignore everything else for a moment and try to concentrate on the fact that this is Hyundai’s first V8. The ultimate question comes to mind, power. So just how much power does this Tau 4.6-litre V8 engine mated to a ZF six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC® manual control and a limited-slip differential put out?

Well over 300 horsepower (223kW) and 400Nm of torque is the answer. It will surely give this new Hyundai some street cred. 0-100 times are expected to be well under six seconds. Hyundai says that they have built this engine with a Supercharger in mind, who knows, in 5 years time Hyundai might release a 300kW supercharged V8 (HSV take note).

The Safety

As mentioned, the Hyundai Genesis comes with ESP with traction control. It also comes with eight airbags and active head restraints. ABS, Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), the disc front rotors being 12.6-inch (320mm) and the rears 12.4-inch (315mm).

    WOW,

Something from Korea i can warm too [hey i like the Korean females,,,,LOL]

The biggest problem will be the price, if its $45k+ forget it, they will sell bugger all, to much choices at that price point.

If they sell it for $30k they will sell zillions of them, they will really put Hyundai on the map big time, dare them to do that…

A Korean car, that boasts safety and performance!!!! Hyundai are certainly pushing themselves. But I doubt this car will come cheap. I’m guessing it will be in the low end 40K bracket. But this car released in Oz will give Hyundai some much needed street cred!

I’m guessing from the ridiculous amount of chrome on the car, that the model pictured is the US one.

  4. alborz Says:

Apparently it will cost around $30,000 USD
so by the time if/when it comes to Australia, i’d say it would be around the 40k mark, which is still good for what you get!

  5. Myke Says:

I have a feeling it will cost a lot more, considering the Grandeur is about $40k

  6. alborz Says:

    Hmm thats true,
cars are far more expensive here than in the states,
Well if they start going over the 45k category they will start running into the SS and XR8, which if you ask any V8 fan, would they rather have an SS/XR8 over a Hyundai V8.. the answer is rather obvious isnt it?

    (Report)

  7. Myke Says:

Are they planning on badging this as a Hyundai?
Because no one thinks Hyundai when they want a luxury car.

  8. alborz Says:

Thats the same problem Toyota/Mazda/Honda had
Honda managed to make it work (to an extent) without resorting to Acura here in Australia, Mazda had the Eunos, which failed… Toyota had the Lexus.. which well… sells more than BMW/Merc now in the states..

I think if Hyundai want to take this seriously, they will need a new brand. They bought out Kia, in the hope that Kia would become the budget car and Hyundai would be.. the better car… but it doesnt work like that when you’ve started at the bottom.

  9. Paul Says:

“0-100 times are expected to be well under six seconds” very hard to believe, it will weigh abit but mainly 220kw and 400Nm of torque isnt a massive amount of power, I would assume mid 6s would be a more realistic figure for the 100 sprint.

Forgetting this, it does look very nice… certainly a great first effort.

  10. Myke Says:

Honda will bring Acura to Oz if they sell 100,000 a year by 2011. It seems they want to become the next Toyota, which is a shame. Hopefully they (unlike Toyota) will kept or introduce sport oriented models, like the Civic Type R.

  11. Damo Says:

Hyundai are really pushing it now, they are trying to get rid of that cheap image and they’re doing it fast. I was impressed back in 2000 when they sourced a 3 litre engine (from TH magna) and 5 speed invecs 2 gearbox from Mitsu for the Granduer, because it was perfect in all aspects but one. I was disappointed when they had some slight cost cutting and decided to put in cheap dodgy suspension but they don’t seem to be doing cost cutting anymore. Thumbs up, just can’t wait for your rally car. I mean come on these guys are making such an effort, they developed the 4cyl 2 litre world engine with chrysler and mitsubishi which is very impressive once again. Korea should the Japan 2.

    (Report)

  12. Myke Says:

Yeah Demo it is good to see that occur. However I find it odd that they still bring cars on the market, that aren’t nice to look at and aren’t good to drive and they rely on low pricing to sell it. Not all their models are like this of course, but it does still occur.

  13. Damo Says:

Yeah but the only real cheapie that small hatchback thing being sold by Hyundai, don’t think it is still called excel because they do not want to be remembered for that dreaded car. Well, this cheapie hatchback without a name for hyundai, I know for a fact that hyundai had designed and put money into it before they decided to become and upperclass brand.

Australian consumers still ‘not ready’ for Hyundai rear-drive V8 prestige sedan

By JAMES STANFORD and TERRY MARTIN 27 March 2007

HYUNDAI will reveal its first V8-powered rear-drive prestige sedan at the New York Motor Show on April 4, however the car will not be coming to Australia in the short term.

Hyundai Motor Co Australia (HMCA) this week ruled out importing the big sedan because it feels Australian consumers are not yet ready to pay prestige prices for a large luxury sedan with a Hyundai badge.

HMCA chief executive Steve Yeo has told GoAuto that the business case for Genesis would not stack up.

“There is no case at all if we can’t sell the product,” Mr Yeo said. He said the disappointing sales performance of the luxury Grandeur sedan range, which starts off at $42,990 and peaks at $46,990, showed HMCA was not ready to start selling the car.

“At this stage, seeing our sales with the Grandeur, I don’t think we should bring in more luxury models to Australia. I don’t think it would be that successful,” he said.

Mr Yeo added that Hyundai models are much better than many Australians think.

“We all agree that the product quality is there, but still the perception for a bigger car is not ready,” Mr Yeo said. “We need a step-by-step approach to the market.”

The Grandeur was re-introduced to Australia in February 2006. The previous model had been absent for two years after being dropped due to poor sales. HMCA confidently predicted the new model would sell 1000 in its first year, but only 575 Grandeurs were sold in that period.

The “Concept Genesis” that Hyundai is presenting in New York is a pointer to a large prestige sedan that will be introduced in the US in 2008.

The Genesis is powered by a 4.6-litre DOHC 32-valve “Tau” V8 that generates “well over 300hp” (224kW) and 300lb/ft (407Nm). The engine has continuous variable valve timing among its features and is mated to a ZF six-speed automatic (with sequential-manual shift control) and a limited-slip differential. Hyundai claims it enables the car to accelerate from 0-60mph (96km/h) in “well under six seconds”.

This is the first model to use a new Hyundai rear-drive platform, which could also be utilised for a sportscar to replace the ageing front-drive Tiburon. The platform provides a 53:47 front/rear weight distribution and “more refined” characteristics from the speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering. Hyundai also claims the car has a 12 to 14 per cent higher torsional rigidity and a lower body-in-white weight than the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-class.

The Genesis rests on a 2935mm wheelbase and measures 5005mm in overall length, 1863mm in width and 1490mm in height. The suspension is a five-link configuration front and rear, track is 1575mm/1580mm front/rear, and the wheels are 20-inch multi-spoke alloys.

Safety technology onboard includes stability control, traction control, eight airbags and active headrests. Braking hardware includes 320mm diameter ventilated discs up front and 314mm solid discs at the rear. ABS with EBD and brake assist are also fitted.

Standard equipment also includes adaptive cruise control, Xenon headlights (with adaptive levelling), a start button, reversing camera, electric park brake and satellite navigation.

Right-hand drive production is still to be confirmed, however overseas reports indicate the sedan will be built for markets outside the US. It is expected the production car will be built at Hyundai’s Alabama factory which is currently used to make the left-hand-drive Sonata and Santa Fe.

Hyundai has also confirmed that the car will be priced in the US below $US30,000, although in Australia it would attract a price of at least $A60,000.

It is likely to be badged as a Hyundai overseas, but could alternatively be used to launch the company’s luxury sub-brand that would work in much the same way that Lexus is linked to Toyota.

Despite the success of Lexus in Australia, Yeo said Hyundai would not be introducing the upcoming luxury sub-brand Down Under for some time.

“(We are) not quite ready to accept now in Australia, but surely in the future we will also have,” said Yeo.

HMCA might be committed to a prestige strategy in the long term, but it is about to target a different demographic with light commercial vehicles.

It wants a piece of the action that saw Kia sell 4500 Pregio vans in 2004 before the vehicle was phased out because it failed to meet emission laws at the end of the following year.

The new Hyundai van will go on sale here next January and Hyundai is currently discussing prices.

HMCA general marketing manager Oliver Mann said the introduction of light commercial vehicles would not damage Hyundai’s bid to move more upmarket, pointing to Mercedes as an example.

“Clearly when a brand like that is trying to position itself at the very top of the premium segment, and at the same time sell commercial vehicles, you might expect to see some impact on their image, but there is no measurable evidence that that is the case,” Mr Mann said. “I don’t think it flies in the face of image-building at all.”

I drive a 99 Granduer 3ltr and i think its a lovelly car to drive but it lacks power. The new V8 would be good to drive if it does what they say it will. I only hope that Hyundai improve the looks on the next one. The looks on the XG and the TG i think suit the inage of the V8, my only hope is that the V8 is interchangable from the new one to the XG range. With the supercharger in mind, well i work in a foundry that makes them for some VERY well known cars such as ford, toyota, holden, just give me the pattern and lets see its performance

Well it seems that no one gets it yet. First it was Ozone problems then the greenhouse issue. V-8? are you idiots, and i mean that in the least Christian sense, are you daft dumb blind and stupid. Even the best 4.6 liter v8(( without question the Lexus 460 series)).. produces tons of Co2 emissions every year. The name of the game should be efficiency why bother with 4.6 liter v8s when 3.5 liter v6 can create 300+ horse. Why did i title this 9/11 all over again easy… every damn gallon of petrol that you buy, you support the arab/muslim world one way or another. In turn they breed more because they have a larger tax base from all the oil they sell us.. and then they start to have riots in the streets and blame the west when their oil starts to run out and all their xtra kids that they made in the time of plenty start getting hungry and then its all down hill from there…

The more consumption of oil we create in the world the more artificial, and unsubstainable oil selling nations become, an artificial market whose base is mandated by light sweet crude is not a good method but makes for great exploitation by profiteers and “free-Market” champions… in turn in destabilizes their economy leaving chance for free fall effects in price, and surging demands, then the following shortages.. We induce these third world oil cans to have faith in the system that is unsustainable, in turn they get bent out of shape when the free money hand outs run out.

So then what happens, they all blame the governments mostly the west for their empty bellies.. the people go againist the modern democratic powers and install despotic theocratic jihadist rulers and then we get post shaw iran and the iran-iraq contra war scenario… taliban sorts.. and the rest of them..

Think about a nice terrorist attack in your city the next time you fill up your v8, you stupid idiots.

I had the previous Grandeur for 6 1/2 years and have the current model since October 2006 and it is a brilliant motor car. Australians are so short-sighted and do not realise that they would be driving a car that rides better, looks better and performs better than most Mercs and Beamers, at half the price and has a full 5 year unlimited KM warranty - what more could you want? It is a shame it has stpped being imported - oh well - it’s their loss. I would buy a Genesis but based on the lack of cred for the Grandeur I don’t think we will see it here - shame.
