Prices for the Ford Focus range in Australia have been cut by up to $2410 with the arrival of the MkII model that takes advantage of a switch to Thailand production.

Driveaway pricing continues to start at $19,990 for the Ford Focus Ambiente trim, though the sedan is now also available with a manual gearbox rather than just an auto.

The Ford Focus Trend manual and Ford Focus Sport manual have driveway prices of $22,890 and $27,490 respectively.

Ford Australia hasn’t confirmed how long the driveaway offers will last.

Ford Australia’s biggest price cut to RRPs is $2410 for the auto versions of the Focus Sport 2.0L TDCi hatch and Focus Trend 2.0L TDCi sedan. Both turbo diesel models now cost $28,090 before on-road costs are added.

There’s a reduction of $2200 for Trend variants, $2000 for Sport trims and $850 for the range-topping Titanium.

All Ford Focus models come standard with the company’s SYNC voice command system that gives drivers hands-free access phone and music information, complete with Bluetooth audio streaming.

The Ford Focus is currently the fifth best-selling small car in Australia, with 2012 sales to August of 11,324 representing a strong 33 per cent year on year increase.

The Focus becomes the latest Ford to be imported from Thailand, following the Fiesta, and taking advantage of Australia’s free trade agreement with the Asian country. The current-generation Focus went on sale in August 2011 and was previously built in Germany.

  • Zaccy16

that will sweeten the deal! nice car the focus and drives brilliantly!

  • Dave W

Hah!! To those people who think our cars aren’t overpriced, just look at all the substantial price cuts that car manufacturers had been doing lately, even on the UK built Civics. They wouldn’t be able to do that if the the markup wasn’t so high in the first place.

    • Fredrl

its not like many of the companies make any money anymore

      • Dave W

I disagree. If they don’t think it’s profitable to operate in Australia, they would simply stop selling cars here. But instead of manufacturers pulling out, we got Opel entering the Australian market. So there is still money to be made here.

I noticed both the Civic hatch and Toyota 86 are about $6000 more expensive than in America, that’s a lot more realistic than how the Mazda MX-5 here costing almost twice as much as the American market.

        • Jerry

Cose not many Americans would fit into MX-5 ;)

          • Dave W

Aussies aren’t that far behind the Yanks. I see plenty of beer guts and manb00bs everywhere I go.

  • Martin

Pretty sure this time last year I predicted this when the Focus pricing came out. Took a year to happen but it did. Hopefully this will improve sales because I’ve seen very few on the roads.

  • MisterZed

Still using 5-speed manual… rofl.  What are Ford stuck in the 80s?  And a N/A 1.6L … I think a 1992 Ford Laser had the same engine.

    • Zaccy16

Yeah what are ford thinking! they would sell more ambientes if it came standard with the 125 kw 2.0

  • Noel

Didn’t the Titanium have a price increase of $850 just a short time ago?

    • Zaccy16

Yeah i thought so too, when it moved from germany to thailand build i think

      • Noel

Exactly, I even remember making a comment on here along the lines of “first time I’ve ever bought a car and it’s gone up in price”.

Come on Ford! it’s not a price reduction if you put it up in the first place lol

  • MissZed

MisterZed- Your name says it all. The 1.6 used years ago was a mazda engine. Maybe go drive one before you type on your keyboard. In fact Ford will be bringing to Aust a 3 cylinder 1 litre engine With more power then your able to handle….

  • Able

STILL a 5-speed manual and no 1.6 EcoBoost! I know I sound like a broken record but Ford keeps harping on about the fabulous technology in the Focus so yes it (finally) has SYNC and Bluetooth and all of that yet it still has a 5-speed manual/no manual diesel and the Titanium is bloody expensive. Few more steps there needed Ford!

    • davie

      Turbo 3cyl sounds interesting.

Perhaps the 1.6 does not have sufficient torque for a 6th gear. But the 2.0 really should have a 6 speed for highway cruising. Most of the competition does these days.

      • Zaccy16

Yeah it definitly should have a 6th gear even the 1.6 92 kw because i remember when the rubbish tiida came out even that had a 6 gear on its 1.8 92 kw engine

        • Andrew M

Hands up who owns a car with a 6 speed manual box…….Mine has a 6 speed and it wouldnt really bother me if it was there or not, the older 5 sp versions seemed to cope just aswell

A 5 speed box is no less usable than a 6 speed.
Lock it into 6th and this thing would probably have no steam.
Also these are meant to be city cars.

    • filippo

Ford Australia believe that offering just a 5-speed manual will make people buy the automatic instead. My prediction is that it will just make buyers look at the Cruze (even though it’s awful), Mazda 3 or Opel Astra instead.

Even in the USA the Focus is available with a 6-speed manual.

    • Zaccy16

Ford Australia always import the s**t trim levels unfortunatly

    • Nasal Explorer

Interesting that the Focus 2.0L manual, even though mated to an ‘ancient’ 5-speed manual transmission, still had the same average fuel consumption as the Hyundai Elantra at 6.6l/100klm. The Elantra only has a smaller 1.8L donk, and a newer 6-speed manual transmission, so it should be far more economical. Ford aren’t doing too badly there!

      • MisterZed

Why should the Elantra be more economical? The Focus engine has GDI (direct-injection), while the Elantra does not.

      • JooberJCW

Trust me my family gets no where near 6.6 in their elantra. its more like 7.5-8.2 avg

        • Nasal Explorer

If it’s mostly city driving, that would be about right. It would be interesting to know some real world Focus consumption figures, too.

  • davie

When Fiesta moved to Thailand, reviewers noted that dash materials changed (to hard plastics) and reach adjustment was lost from steering wheel. Is this the case with Focus as well?

    • TomW

Honestly, WGAF about dash materials? Why do motoring journalists persist on tapping the dash to prove (or disprove) the quality of interior materials? Do you drive along poking your spongy dash thinking “How good is this?”

As for the reach adjustment, well that could possibly be a problem. You’ll either like or dislike the position. My (previous model) Focus does have it, and guess how many times it’s been adjusted? Yep, the first time I used it, and not once since. No driver, whether wife or mechanic, has bothered to change it.

      • Dave W

Some hard plastic dashboard creaks, and it gets worse on bumpy road, which is pretty common in Sydney. That can get pretty damn annoying after awhile.

      • Zaccy16

quality does matter because all the competition has a better quality and better laid out interior than the focus, the b est small car would be a focus exterior and handling and a volkswagen golf tsi engine with dsg and the golfs inteior

        • Captain Nemo®™

Oh Zuppy you’re hilarious bud.  A Focus with VeeDud’s TSI hand grenade & DSG clunk-o-rama combo what an awesome car that would be…NOT!!
Ford would be better using the old Kent motor rather than a TSI from VeeDuddy.

          • Zaccy16

Have you ever driven a vw tsi engine? sounds great, powerful and torquey but good on fuel, test drive one and comment on not the reliability but how good it is to drive

          • Jober As A Sudge

VW 118TSI engine was a great engine let down by reliability.

      • JooberJCW

A number of people do, I for one. Some people care for the overall aspect of the car, not just because it just has a great engine, handling and dont care about the rest. Soft interiors whether is a rubberised sort of platic or leather wrapped makes the ambient feel much better than a hard, creaky, rattly no frills interior.

    • Zaccy16

Yeah they did go abit down grade when it went to thailand to be built

    • Crummydore

No, just picked up our Thai Ambiente last week and the interior still has the same soft touch dash etc – I did make sure this was the case before I signed for the car as I am not a fan of hard plastics on dash boards (pretty close to the golf here).

And the base model now features an armrest/bin and the indicator stalk is on the R/H/S.

Features the Sync system now so can play the iphone through the voice recognition (not perfect but good enough) – downside with that upgrade is that the voice recognition doesn’t change the radio stations anymore.

Very happy so far with the car, great price and goes well enough – the 1.6 is fine.

  • Emailjhorn

Just got a manual Trend. Awesome to drive and looks really good. Super comfortable too. Best car for the price.

  • Latin Fish Names

I really like the TDCi Sport hatch… Too bad the boot is only 330 litres in size and the Diesel used a DPF. Still a great car and now better buying.

    • Cobber

I love it. Another idiotic reference to DPF’s. A DPF is just another part of a car that, despite what you might think, serves a purpose and, like many parts, requires some form of maintenance. Fortunately in this case the maintenance is as simple as driving at a constant speed above 60km/h (or thereabouts) for 10-15mins. Easy and no cost. For f*** sake, go for a drive on a sunday afternoon and stop whinging. People buy a car, have no idea where the dipstick is, how to check the tyre pressure or where to refill the washer fluid and then wonder why it doesn’t perform as intended??

      • 3litre

you are a ignorant person. LFM made a simple comment and advised their thoughts. A DPF is not cost free as you suggest. Read up on how a DPF actually works…

        • Cobber

Yep, well aware of how a DPF actually works champ – I have one on my vehicle.

Key question for me is if the quality drops from the previous German sourced models

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jean-Michel-De-Speville/679583263 Jean-Michel

They are exactly the same as the german sourced models.

  • Jazrod

I’ve noticed that the Titanium has lost its heated seats, even after gaining full leather trim (instead of the half-leather, half-fabric). Though the step to full leather is better, your bum is just going to get colder in winter! Haha.

For those who think heated seats are pointless in Aus, they’re really not. Use them all the time in the XR5T.

    • Noel

Couldn’t agree more, the last 3 cars have had heated seats and I honestly wouldn’t do without them, my list for must haves in cars is interesting though.  If a car doesn’t have rain sensing wipers, auto Xenon headlights, sunroof or sat nav it is automatically removed from my consideration list.  Since getting my Focus Titanium with sports exec pack I also will not consider a car without radar cruise (best idea ever).

      • Legnab

No good if it does not have RVC .

  • james

The 2L engine in Trend is not bad, much better than Honda’s Civic “Sport”
    125 kw @ 6600rpm, 202 Nm @ 4450 RPMHonda’s 2L?
    114kw @6500 RPM, 190Nm @ 4300 rpm

    Pathetic honda!!!

    • Roger

Have to agree, honda civic sport is a SOHC 2 litre whereas trend is direct injection

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jean-Michel-De-Speville/679583263 Jean-Michel

I road tested both the Toyota corolla and the Focus trend and I can confirm that the focus is miles ahead in all categories.

  • Knight

I was about to order a Titanium but gave up in disgust when Ford raised the price with construction in Thailand. Typical of Ford to start out too high then leave loyal customers in the lurch with a price drop. I ordered a car from a rival company that treats its customers with a little respect.

    • Joe

Nice try Knight. The Thai built Focus Titanium did not change in MLP over the German sourced Titanium. In fact “Drive Away” pricing has not changed at all, on any of the models.
It’s only now that the MLP’s are going down, even though the “Drive Away” pricing has still remained the same.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jean-Michel-De-Speville/679583263 Jean-Michel

You are 100% right. They must have been smoking some funny tobaccos.

    • Zaccy16

Your right knight, i was looking at the focus too and ford told me thatb it had raised about $800 dollars for a worse built car, wheres the logic there?

  • Nitegalaxy

Anyone know when they actually get into Melbourne. Was Initially told August and am still waiting!!
